Population[edit]

This article claims a population for the town of around 20,000 yet the Greater_Manchester_Urban_Area, using data from the 2011 census, claims a population in excess of 70,000 (and the figures show a tripling of the population since the 2001 census). Any idea what the right data are?--ЗAНИA talk WB talk] 18:36, 25 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Some of it is indeed population growth but most will come from the enlargement of the area through change in statistical methodology (Leigh population 43,006 in 2001 is now under Atherton), if you look at the map of what is the urban sub division of Atherton you will see it covers a vast area not just that of the town of Atherton itself. With the changes in mind the population of Atherton and Leigh combined has increased by 7,000 in the ten years. WatcherZero (talk) 20:49, 25 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Notable people[edit]

Adding every person who has lived in a place leads to a long list of trivia. It would be a pity to disfigure good articles with such lists. J3Mrs (talk) 14:05, 8 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

It certainly would. So who is suggesting "adding every person who has lived in a place"? I think we should be told. Martinevans123 (talk) 14:08, 8 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
You're the one starting one with a minor celebrity entry. J3Mrs (talk) 14:13, 8 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I'm "starting" nothing at all. Your comment is complete hyperbole. If any person is sufficiently notable to have an article, as does Dave Dutton, I see nothing wrong with adding him to the section of "Notable residents". Dutton is further qualified by his still living in Atherton and writing about the local history of this very place. He is even used as a source for this article. There are only 21 people listed at Category:People from Atherton, Greater Manchester and it's very unclear to me what objective criteria are being used to include and exclude each of these. Removing people who seem perfectly notable, and are supported by relevant external source, comes across as WP:OWN. I really don't see how adding Dave Dutton can "disfigure" an article, even if it's a Good Article. Martinevans123 (talk) 14:29, 8 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

A GA from 2009. Some uncited statements needs to be cited. The citations for notable residents section needs to be cleaned up as some are just brackets and not actual footnotes. The article needs to be updated as lots of things are source to the 2001 UK census. Onegreatjoke (talk) 18:31, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
