Before adding any paralympic athlete to an article we should remember wikipedia sports guidelines: Only paralympic athletes "Who Medal" are considered notable enough for an article. There will always be exceptions if someone gets a ton of English press coverage, but otherwise the article can be deleted. Fyunck(click) (talk) 07:24, 9 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I'm afraid you are somewhat misrepresenting the guideline: "Only paralympic athletes "Who Medal" are presumed notable enough for an article. There will always be exceptions if someone gets significant ~~English~~ press coverage, ~~but otherwise the article can be deleted~~ an article can be created."

An SNG only provides for a presumption of notability, actual confirmed notability depends on the existence of sources. There is absolutely no requirement that sources need to be in English. The notability guideline is primarily about the creation of articles - an already established article needs to go through the proper deletion procedures. As an English wikipedia it is far more important to get English language press coverage than other languages. Bornian press coverage would likely not make it here in this English wikipedia but would in a Bornio wikipedia. As for deleting... that was poorly worded on my part...sorry. I meant it could be nominated for deletion in the usual ways or discussions. However if it's a new article stub that is something like, "Fred is a paralympic Falkland Island javelin thrower", and pretty much nothing else...it's not at all likely to make it here as an article per longstanding guidelines. No absolutely not! You totally misunderstand a fundamental principle of Wikipedia if you believe that there is an intentional preference for English subjects or topics that are discussed more in English sources. That is in fact a WP:systemic bias that we are supposed to try to work against. The fact that material from Fooian language reliable sources have a hard time geiing into the English Wikipedia is a problem, not something we should accept and promote. Language has absolutely ZERO relevance to notability. Yes I agree that "Fred is a paralympic Falkland Island javelin thrower" is not an acceptable article but that ha absolutely nothing to do with the fact that Fred has no mentions in English sources. Please just get rid of this "enlish matters" idea. (Bad example BTW, because the Falkland Islanders are English speaking - in fact they are British.) You link me to an essay? Those can be anything from somewhat informative to useless garbage and pov. Wikipedia Policy is that since "this is the English Wikipedia, English-language sources are preferred over non-English ones." If there are English sources on UK airplanes and Chinese sources on UK airplanes which do you think are going to be mostly ignored here at this English speaking wikipedia? English does matter. Just like when we decide what name to use for a country here on wikipedia we will use the English language sourcing/spelling rather than the Russian version. But of course not all sources will be in English at all so we take them as we can get them and then translate if possible. The example was fine as it was simply illustrating the point that no one cares about a non-medaling paralympic javelin thrower whether he comes from Abeline,Kansas...Alice Springs, AUS...or Tanganyika.
