Pre-ACC championships

I have no problem with CFred taking off Miami's pre ACC championships for consistency. We should be consistent. And, as anti-Miami person, anything that would irritate a Hurricane fan is ok with me.

However, I think that, if you were to ask the ACC powers that be, I suspect that they would prefer to include the championships of all their member schools that antedate their membership in the ACC. I think they would believe—and I would concur—that the prestige of the conference stems as much from the pedigree of the individual schools as it does from the conference's collective history. So, another thing that could be done, for consistency's sake, would be to include all championships, whether they precede membership or not. That, as I now think about it, would be the best thing to do. Of course, I don't know enough about it to make it happen, but if others would . . . Unschool 05:03, 10 January 2007 (UTC)

Anyone reading this note may want to consider redirecting or merging the above into this article (or proposing its deletion). I'm not conversant enough with the league and this TV coverage to make a call. I'll watch for it. Thanks! --Stormbay 21:36, 22 May 2007 (UTC)

I just WP:PRODded it. No point to it. At most, maybe it's worth modifying the infobox to add a list TV partners, but I'm not sure even that's worthwhile. The ACC's historic ties to Jefferson Pilot Sports might merit mention, but there's nothing encyclopedic about the Sunday night FSN TV package. VT hawkeyetalk to me 17:46, 24 May 2007 (UTC)

Rivalries redux -- opinions wanted

I just reverted the removal of a couple OOC rivalries involving Virginia Tech that predate VT's ACC membership and are, at least for the moment, closed series (VMI I doubt will ever be renewed, but WVU well could be). If BC's hockey rivalries are relevant, VT-VMI (and the inherent comparison that for many years defined why VT had difficulty even being considered for ACC membership) certainly merits inclusion on a historical basis.

The whole rivalries section is a POV-riddled mess, though, and I think that's a fundamental flaw of all sports rivalries sections (we've had the same problem in WP:HOCKEY). How do you define a rivalry? A trophy? Geographic proximity? Fan bases that "don't like" each other? (And how do you measure that?) A run of close games? A run of games with conference or national championship implications? Does it have to be symmetrical? Can we get some standards here?

At the very least, even brushing aside the POV issues, it seems to me that OOC rivalries might be better suited for inclusion in the participating schools' athletics articles. But that needs to be a global decision rather than simply affecting one school. Ideas? VT hawkeyetalk to me 18:56, 24 September 2007 (UTC)

I agree. The between-school rivalries should be handled in the individual school/team articles, not in article about the conference as a whole. -Gwguffey (talk) 19:17, 25 January 2008 (UTC)
