Problems with the article

[edit]

I consider the article highly promotional, and I am considering the two options, of rewriting it much more briefly, or listing it for deletion. Even with permission according to WP:DCM, the copy of a web page will have contents and tone that are not encyclopedic and the material will not be suitable.

Since there are several editors involved, I have put a fuller discussion here.

Include only material that would be of interest to a general reader coming across the mention of the organization and wanting the sort of information that would be found in an encyclopedia. Do not include material that would be of interest only to those associated with the organization, or to prospective clients--that sort of content is considered promotional. Keep in mind that the goal of an encyclopedia is to say things in a concise manner, which is not the style of press releases or web sites, which are usually more expansive.

As a general rule, a suitable page will be best written by someone without Conflict of Interest; it's not impossible to do it properly with a conflict of interest or as a paid press agent, but it's relatively more difficult: you are automatically thinking in terms of the organization wishes to communicate to the public, but an uninvolved person will think in terms of what the public might wish to know. I assume one or more of the editors of the article have such a connection. Connection or not, if you think you can do it right according to our guidelines, do so, but expect the article to be carefully checked for objectivity. DGG ( talk ) 14:40, 11 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I've done a preliminary edit of the first part. A considerable amount more is needed. The only appropriate picture was that of the conference--I removed the group portraits. I would be grateful if someone can find a current source, preferably in English, that actually discusses rather than advertises the work of this organization. The article makes very large claims, and the foundation for them is unclear. DGG ( talk ) 23:10, 11 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Temporary protection

In view of the repeated addition of promotional junk to this article, new users may not edit it. To request a change to it, add {{edit protected}} to this page, followed by a description of your request. Suggested changes specifying the legal nature of "Atomium Culture"; Atomium Culture is an AISBL (Associations Internationales Sans But Lucratif) under Belgian Law. Please see reference http://atomiumculture.eu/node/121 and http://kbopub.economie.fgov.be/kbopub/zoekwoordenform.html?ondernemingsnummer=0881395943&actionEntnr=Recherche+d%27entreprise&natuurlijkPersoon=true&_natuurlijkPersoon=on&rechtsPersoon=true&_rechtsPersoon=on&searchWord=&_oudeBenaming=on&pstcdeNPRP=&postgemeente1=&familynameFonetic=&pstcdeNPFonetic=&postgemeente2=&searchwordRP=&_oudeBenaming=on&pstcdeRPFonetic=&postgemeente3=&rechtsvormFonetic=ALL&familynameExact=&firstName=&pstcdeNPExact=&postgemeente4=&firmName=&pstcdeRPExact=&postgemeente5=&rechtsvormExact=ALL.

Thus I would suggest the following changes to the leading paragraph:

Atomium Culture AISBL is an International Non-Profit Organisation that brings together major European universities, newspapers and businesses in a shared platform for the selection, exchange, and dissemination of particularly significant European research, [1][2]. The organisation was founded in 2006 by Valéry Giscard d'Estaing and Michelangelo Baracchi Bonvicini, now Honorary President and President of Atomium Culture [1]. The organisation was launched publicly in 2009 at the European Parliament in Brussels.[3]

I noticed that the last sentence of the first paragraph is incomplete. I agree with the author above that the sentence should read: The organisation was launched publicly in 2009 at the European Parliament in Brussels.[3]

It looks like the previous editor missed the final line in the edit request on accident. I have added it in now. --Jnorton7558 (talk) 23:35, 19 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with initial comments. Therefore I would suggest to do the following edits to ensure neutrality of the article and to remove the tags.

1) As Mission I would suggest to remove the current text and insert the following text:

The mission of Atomium Culture is encourage the development of a knowledge society in Europe by increasing the cooperation and dialogue between the institutions engaged and to increase public interest in science.

2) As History I would remove the current text and suggest to insert:

In 2006 the Permanent Platform of Atomium Culture was formally founded under the Law of Belgium as an International Non-Profit Organisation (Association International Sans But Lucratif).

Starting from a small nucleus of universities, a start-up followed, that has obtained the engagement of many universities, major newspapers, and important businesses in Europe, and led to the creation of the Permanent Platform for European Excellence of Atomium Culture. By its public launch, it was operative in eighteen countries in Europe and engaged 25 universities, over one hundred thousand researchers, over one million students, seventeen newspapers, around ten million European readers per day, and some of the most important businesses in Europe with a total turnover of 720 Billion Euros[5] and around ninety thousand researchers engaged.

(where[5] is http://atomiumculture.eu/node/34 )

The Permanent Platform of AC was launched publicly by the former French President Valéry Giscard d'Estaing and by Michelangelo Baracchi Bonvicini, currently Honorary President and President of Atomium Culture, on the 27 November 2009 at the European Parliament in Brussels. The European Manifesto of Atomium Culture was simultaneously made public by many of the European newspapers engaged in the Permanent Platform, among which Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung[9], El País [10], and Il Sole 24 Ore.

3) I would take away the tags related to the article. I would keep it protected for a little while longer to maintain the suggested clean style.

Re. the first part, you are using a non-independent source to make claims; please review WP:PRIMARY esp. A primary source may only be used on Wikipedia to make straightforward, descriptive statements that any educated person, with access to the source but without specialist knowledge, will be able to verify are supported by the source - and re-request, if a suitable suggestion could be made; thanks,  Chzz  ►  03:51, 28 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I would suggest the following modifications on the page to make it more clean and explanatory:

1. Remove the current version of the first paragraph in "Mission":

"The mission of Atomium Culture is to increase the knowledge transfer and the cooperation between the institutions concerned in it, to increase the public interest in science and knowledge, to change the way thinkers act. and to create a dynamic environment to prevent a brain drain from Europe. Its activities are based on the exchange of knowledge between different sectors and different institutions in order to bridge communication gaps and keep civil society informed of breakthroughs in scientific research. Giscard d’Estaing defined it as a “new vision of a Europe of intelligence”.[4]."

and insert the following text:

"The mission of Atomium Culture is encourage the development of a knowledge society in Europe by increasing the cooperation and dialogue between the institutions engaged, to increase public interest in science and to create a dynamic environment to prevent a brain drain from Europe.[4]"

(where[4] is http://www.europolitics.info/sectorial-policies/official-launch-of-platform-for-european-excellence-art255918-18.html )

Done. I checked the source and the statement is verifiable. --Deepvalley (talk) 18:20, 15 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

2. In the "History" section I'd remove the following text:

"The idea of Atomium Culture was presented by Bonvicini in April 2004 to Giscard d'Estaing , the then President of the European Convention and former President of France.[citation needed]. From April 2004 to December 2005, the project developed its permanent platform, based on the principle that a real knowledge society can develop only with the participation and cooperation of the main sectors of society. The project was formally organised in 2006 under the Law of Belgium as an International Non-Profit Organisation.

Starting from a small nucleus of universities, a start-up followed, that has obtained the engagement of many universities, major newspapers, and important businesses in Europe, and led to the creation of the Permanent Platform for European Excellence of Atomium Culture. By its public launch , it included eighteen countries in Europe. and comprised 25 universities, over one hundred thousand researchers, over one million students, seventeen newspapers, around ten million European readers per day, and some of the most important businesses in Europe with a total turnover of 720 Billion Euros[6] and around ninety thousand researchers engaged."

{{edit semi-protected}} I would suggest the following modifications on the page to make it more clean and explanatory:

1. In the "Activities" section, paragraph "Area of Exchange" I'd suggest to delete the following text:

"The Area of Exchange is based on the assumption that the transition to a knowledge society requires a change in the way different actors of society interact; in the structure and patterns of societal interactions.

It periodically brings together people from universities, business, newspapers and policy making r to create comprehensive intersectorial and interdisciplinary debates; these debates can then be followed by the public at large to improve understanding of questions of public concern.

Every semester, the Permanent Platform of Atomium Culture organizes a High-Level Workshop (HLW) in collaboration with the actors engaged in the platform and with the main policy makers on topics of public interest that have their foundations within research, innovation and culture. [18] The first High-Level Workshop, in December 2009 in Sweden, was on “Governance for a Low Carbon Society”[2]. This conference was organised with the Swedish Presidency of the Council of the European Union [3], in the days before the COP-15 Summit in Copenhagen[19]. The recommendations of the conference completed the Report prepared under the scientific coordination of Lund University and that was given to the Swedish Presidency of the Council of the European Union.[20] Subsequently, the Report on Governance for a Low-Carbon Society [4] was presented at the COP-15 Summit in Copenhagen.[21]

The second Workshop was organised in Spain in June 2010, [22], on “eHealth: European Healthcare in a Time of Changing Demographics”[23]. The event was based on a Report that had been prepared under the scientific guidance of the Universidad Autonoma de Madrid [24]. The event was concluded through the Atomium Culture-El País debate on the issue[25].

In November 2010, the High-Level Workshop on Living in a Low-Carbon Society was held in Brussels.[26], based on a repport edited under the scientific guidance of Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Lund University and Universidad Autonoma de Madrid."
