Loss of conditioned air?[edit]

Does anyone have any information (probably from the 1940s or so before HVAC became popular) about cooling a house using an attic fan? I have some anecdotal accounts of people using one as a primary cooling method, and obtaining results as good as a central air conditioning system, but haven't been able to find anything concrete because the advent of HVAC caused a lot of older cooling technologies to be forgotten. --69.151.248.57 (talk) 16:58, 28 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

You are probably thinking about a whole house fan, which is also frequently called an "attic fan" because it blows air into the attic from the living space below. To answer your question, people did use them as a primarily cooling method, especially back in the 1940s and 50s in the South. Because of the movement of air, comfortable conditions could be obtained making it "feel" much cooler than it might actually be. Kyle1081 (talk) 05:04, 6 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
