Why Oswego?[edit]

One of several unanswered questions, (Who was Mme Wiegand? Who were their daughters? Did any of them accompany him to America?) but this one is perplexing. The remuneration was better than Sydney's, but not significantly so, and he would have been welcomed in Brussels, Paris, or even London. A clue may reside in the priest section of the graveyard of St Paul's, Oswego, where there is a marker dedicated to one Augusta Wiegand (1838–1907). Perhaps a cousin? No, it's not a mistake: in the non-priest section are:

Auguste Wiegand (1849–1904) (subject of this article)
Louis Wiegand (died 2 March 1912)
Ruth Wiegand (1901—1907)
Catherine Wiegand n.d.
Bertha Wiegand (1874—1876)
