First of all thanks to Flex for his constructive editing.

Toplady is often dismissed, even by his friends, as a destructive polemesist and hence an explanation of the reasons for his indignation is valuable. While neutrality is of course to be desired this has to be balanced against setting forth the reasons for Toplady's disgust at the treatment that he suffered. I have delibereatly avoided making historical judgements of Wesley as such comments would not be neutral, but the fact that Toplady thought that Wesley had acted dishonestly is crucial to understanding Topladys conduct.
