Commonwealth marine reserves are a class of marine protected areas rather than being marine parks[edit]

The term "protected marine environments" used in the opening sentence was replaced with the term "marine protected area" because this is the term used by the Australian government to describe all types of protected areas used for marine environments by Australian, state and territory governments - please refer http://www.environment.gov.au/system/files/pages/761994ab-42cc-4f24-952c-c21221861884/files/national-capad-2016m.xlsx. In fact, there are at least 20 terms used by the above-mentioned governments for particular marine protected areas including marine parks and marine reserves.
