Accreditation

[edit]

Avalon University School of Medicine is not accredited by any accreditation agency therefore the accreditation section should be added. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 208.54.40.140 (talk) 19:39, 30 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

When adding information to an article, please provide reliable independent references. This is required for any statements, but especially those which might be or are challenged. This is necessary for Wikipedia's core policy of verifiability -- and will also prevent your edits from being reverted. I did find a suitable reference about the school's accreditation (or lack thereof) and added into the intro. I think that should suffice. CactusWriter (talk) 00:36, 31 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The school is accredited by the curacao govt hence its listing in the IMED directory. Medical schools that are recognized by the appropriate agencies in their respective countries are listed in the International Medical Education Directory. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ng54 (talkcontribs) 06:15, 2 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I agree that inclusion in the IMED directory means the school is recognized by the government of Curacao. I have that info along with info about a pending review with CARICOM. CactusWriter (talk) 18:04, 2 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Why does somebody keep coming on this page and saying that this school is not accredited? It is accredited by the ministry of health of curacao. Cactus writer is there a way that you can stop people from making that change? It is not true. The definition of educational accreditation is "In most countries in the world, the function of educational accreditation is conducted by a government organization, such as a ministry of education." Of course avalon has this hence its listing in the IMED. Ng54 (talk) 23:45, 4 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I agree but its a user LEUKO who is visiting one schools page after the other and doesnt understand those basic concepts that each school has their own recognition/accreditation from the local government agencie to by established. He did it to UMHS, Windsor, CMU and now Avalon. Maybe CactusWriter can put an end to it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Caribdoc1977 (talkcontribs) 00:33, 5 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

<redacted>

I request the admin to look into the vandalizm/edit wars of the user LEUKO, who doesnt understand what the term accreditation means. This wikipedia turns into the war zone of some users who hate the existance of Caribbean med schools. LEUKO's additions violates the neutral point of view police as he alters articles without specifing any verifiable sources of his statements. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 208.54.38.192 (talk) 05:28, 5 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

No, sorry, I am afraid you are confused on the terms. A local government can recognize a medical school by granting a charter to award MD degrees, but accreditation is from an outside agency, such as CAAM-HP or ACCM. Leuko Talk/Contribs 05:47, 5 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
First, to those throwing personal accusations -- stop it. They have no place here. As well, if the edit war and reversions continue, the page can be locked and/or editors may be blocked from editing. Please resolve this through discussion and consensus.
Now, as I understand it, the terms of "recognition" and "accreditation" are different -- especially in relation to schools associated with the United States. The section on recognition vs. accreditation in this report helps clarify the distinction. Essentially, accreditation for US medical schools requires an independent non-governmental organization. In 2010, the ECFMG agreed and acknowledged that recognition by the government agency of the country in which a medical school is located does not equal accreditation. (Please read "Moving Accreditation Forward", ECFMG, September 21 2010). Because of this, ECFMG has implemented a requirement that within the next 12 years, all foreign medical schools must be accredited by a recognized independent accrediting agency.
In regard to this specific article: the listing in IMED only indicates Avalon University has been recognized by the Curacao government. It does not equal accreditation. The school promotes itself as having offices in the United States -- but certainly does not meet US accreditation requirements, which require a listing in an approved independent accreditation agency. A reliable source (WHO AVICENNA directory) is provided which states the school has no accreditation nor recognition, therefore it can be stated as such.
Wikipedia depends upon verifiability. Until a reliable source is provided, (such as a listing in the CAAM-HP), which states the school has been accredited -- Avalon University is not accredited as far as Wikipedia is concerned. CactusWriter (talk) 19:05, 5 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

While I agree that the school has not been accredited by the CAAM-HP organization yet, it is still incorrect to say that the school is unaccredited, as it has been said in the first line. If you refer to the definition of accreditation it says "In most countries in the world, the function of educational accreditation is conducted by a government organization, such as a ministry of education" Avalon is located in curacao. By using this definition avalon is accredited by the ministry of health of the curacao government. So saying unaccredited is incorrect. I think saying that the school does not have external accreditation is fine but saying that this is an unaccredited school as is written in the first line is incorrect. Please remove that word at the beginning and keep everything else the same. I think that is a good balance. Again saying unaccredited is invalid according to the definition that wikepedia provides of accreditation. Remember the campus is located in curacao, not the u.s. Until 2023 when ecfmg officially enlists the policy that all foreign schools need an outside accreditation such as CAAM-HP, the accreditation by the ministry of health of curacao signifies some type of accreditation. Ng54 (talk) 15:52, 8 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I understand what you are saying, but in the case of AUSOM, there are two major discrepancies. First, the school does promote itself as based in the United States. See the school's home page where it states AUSOM is a U.S. based medical program... Second, although the school has an IMED listing, the AVICENNA directory listing (under "Recognition") clearly states The medical school and its programme in medical education are not subject to accreditation or a similar process of official recognition. AVICENNA is a reliable published source. Now, if there is a mistake, than it is up to AUSOM to correct it. But until such time, Wikipedia must accept it's statement of "unaccredited" as accurate. Please remember that Wikipedia operates through verifiability, not truth. CactusWriter (talk) 21:21, 8 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
