Some claims on the Web site www.vlachophiles.net that should be confirmed from better sources:

  • Romanian school founded 1867
  • In 1905, Avdela was a center of pro-Romanian sentiment.
  • In 1906, it was burned by Greek antartes because of this.

Pro-Romanian or Pro-Greek?

[edit]

I don't like phrases like "some sources this, some sources that", either. But in this case, I'm not sure I see an alternative.

It is WP:SYNTH to combine the claim that there was pro-Romanian sentiment and the claim that it was a stronghold of Greek nationalism into the combination "both a centre of Aromanian population and a stronghold of Greek nationalism", which removes the claim that there was pro-Romanian sentiment. According to Christodoulou, for example, Dimitrios Manakis were identified by Greek intelligence as a "fanatic Romaniser" and his son Yannakis was pro-Romanian, while Miltos was pro-IMRO, even though their ancestors had been pro-Greek during the Greek Revolution. [1]. Even during WW II, there were apparently some Avdeliots who sided with the Italians. [2]

I don't have a definitive conclusion out of all this (and I do intend to add the above sources). As best I can tell, there were factions on all sides of the issue. But let's preserve WP:NPOV and avoid WP:OR and WP:SYNTH.

As for whether the school was "Romanian" or "Aromanian", it was probably subsidized by the Romanian government (and thus politically "Romanian"), and taught the Aromanian language (probably Greek as well). See the Apostol Mărgărit article for more background on this. --Macrakis (talk) 19:02, 19 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
