Station name
[edit]@Secondarywaltz, EelamStyleZ, Mattximus, Johnny Au, and Joeyconnick: Please see request to rename the Oriole Park station article. TheTrolleyPole (talk) 20:49, 8 May 2017 (UTC)
Apparently, Metrolinx has flip-flopped the name of this station from "Avenue" to "Oriole Park" and then back to "Avenue". The article reflects the flip but not the flop.
A January 2016 Torontoist article says: Metrolinx staff recommended several name changes. ... Avenue became “Oriole Park,” [but] Oriole Park was renamed back to “Avenue”.
Confirming the Torontoist article, Metrolinx sent me an email reply saying:
RE: Oriole Park Station or Avenue Station |
---|
Thanks for your email and question....yes the final name for the station in Avenue Station. Please allow me to explain a bit more why it is Avenue.
The selection of Crosstown station names was the result of considerable work and coordinated consultation with key stakeholders. Naming recommendations were based on Naming Principles and Protocols developed over a period of 12 months, beginning in late 2014, and included regular engagement with GTHA local transit operators. The Naming Principles and Protocols decrees that station names be derived from the streets, neighbourhoods and landmarks that surround them and typically selected in that order. For example, if a street name has already been used for a station on another transit line, such as Dufferin on the Bloor-Danforth line, it cannot be used again on a new line, so the neighbourhood then becomes the next option. For the Crosstown, the station located at Dufferin and Eglinton has been named Fairbank, after Fairbank Village. Notice that “Village” has been dropped in the station name. This is because, in addition to avoiding duplication, station names must also be distinguishable from that which they are named after. In the case of Avenue Station, we named the station and dropped “Road” so that it is distinguishable from the street itself. I hope that answers your questions but please feel free to contact our office again with any additional comments or questions. Regards Lancefield Morgan |
Currently, the Chaplin station and Eglinton (TTC) articles show "Avenue" as the next station, but the Line 5 Eglinton article still shows "Oriole Park".
I propose changing the article name to "Avenue station" (small "s" for station which seems to be the present convention). There is already a redirect called "Avenue Station" (with capital "S") which might give me some difficulty in renaming (move) the article. Any comments are welcome. - Sounds good to me... the Crosstown site also lists it as Avenue. Given the discussions we've been having at WP:CANSTATION lately, Avenue station seems like the best choice. You might have to request speedy deletion for Avenue Station. UPDATE: actually, you might not have to get Avenue Station deleted; looks like you could just redirect it to "Avenue station" as it'll let me create "Avenue station" if I want (from the redlink). —Joeyconnick (talk) 22:07, 8 May 2017 (UTC)

The deed is done but not quite perfectly. "Avenue Station" instead of "Avenue station" appears in article name search lists. Template:TTC lines and stations contains the Avenue station link, but articles using this template still show Oriole Park. Perhaps there is an overnight job to rectify these problems. If the problems persist tomorrow, I will ask the Help service for assistance.TheTrolleyPole (talk) 00:34, 9 May 2017 (UTC)
- Changed on List of Toronto subway stations, template looks good for me. Mattximus (talk)
- The two problems went away probably cured by some automatic background process.TheTrolleyPole (talk) 21:05, 9 May 2017 (UTC)
- If a page is including another via template transclusion, and you change the template being transcluded, you either have to edit the page doing the including to get it to "rebuild" or you have to "purge" that page. I did that in at least one of the cases. —Joeyconnick (talk) 23:38, 9 May 2017 (UTC)
