Averbode Abbey, founded about 1134–35 by Count Arnold II of Loon, is a Premonstratensian monastery situated in the Archdiocese of Mechelen-Brussels in Belgium. The abbey reached its peak in the 16th and 17th centuries, though over the past hundred years it has been in a state of decline.Photograph: JH-man

Canons not monks

The Premonstratensians are canons, not monks. This is noted in the last sentence in the article, although everywhere else in the article they are referred to as monks. I have corrected these references.Caeruleancentaur (talk) 14:43, 10 August 2013 (UTC)

Unclear sentences

These two sentences make no sense in English.

"The first abbey church was inaugurated in 1194, and soon after the nuns, who until then resided in Averbode as well, moved to Keizerbos, where it stayed until it disappeared in 1796." To what does "it" refer? Where the word is placed, it refers to the nuns: "...the nuns,...moved to Keizerbos, where it/they stayed until it/they disappeared in 1796." Who or what stayed and then disappeared? Clarification please.

"The abbey was at the time a motor of the village life, with also a school, a harmony, a library and a thespian society." What does "motor of the village life" mean? A motor is an engine. What is "a harmony"? "Harmony" means the simultaneous combination of notes in a chord, or agreement in feeling, approach, etc.; sympathy". Clarification please.

These sentences sound as though they were translated by someone not totally familiar with English.

The second one seems to be added by me, the first one I don't know about. With "harmnoy", I meant a Concert band; I mistakenly thought that the Dutch "harmonie" could also be used in English. "Motor of the village life" means that it was the central driving force behind much of the common activities in the village.

Wrt to Keizerbos, it seems to me that it should be "they stayed until it disappeared", where "it" refers to Keizerbos Abbey. Fram (talk) 06:58, 26 August 2013 (UTC)

Averbode Abbey is a Premonstratensian abbey in Averbode, in the municipality of Scherpenheuvel-Zichem, Belgium. The abbey was founded about 1134, suppressed in 1797, and re-established in 1834. The church is a synthesis of Baroque and Gothic architecture, with Renaissance ornamental details, and dominates the monastery complex; it was built between 1664 and 1672, to a design by the Antwerp architect Jan Van den Eynde II. This view of the church's interior shows the chancel, with the choir in the foreground and the sanctuary in the background.
