"is" vs. "was"[edit]

I may be mistaken, but is the Ayles Ice Shelf no longer considered a shelf if it has broken free from land? If that is the case, should the opening statement not read "The Ayles Ice Shelf was one of six major shelves..."? Robotman1974 23:08, 29 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Where? Geologic coordinates?"[edit]

83° 1'30.58"N 77°33'33.22"W

Appears to be close. At this spot Google Earth resolution is poor. However a tour around the Ellesmere Island and it's satellite islands makes it clear that this is no strange event, seems there are lots of float ice to be seen everywhere in the region.

90%?[edit]

The last sentence under "Breakup" desperately needs a credible citation as it does not sound believable. 148.78.245.12 20:44, 30 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Map ?[edit]

Does anyone have a good map that shows where Ayles is/was on Ellesmere Island ? I think this would be useful. --PFHLai 22:24, 30 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

named after Adam Ayles ?[edit]

I suspect that the Ayles Ice Shelf was named after Arctic explorer Adam Ayles, who served under George Nares as the Petty Officer of HMS Alert in the British Arctic Expedition. Can anyone confirm this and add this to the article, please ? Thanks. --PFHLai 00:32, 31 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The link to Mount Ayles seems to confirm this. Carcharoth 15:30, 2 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
This link confirms it. I'll add to both articles. Carcharoth 15:32, 2 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

A LOT of people contributed to this one, to make it better. GREAT collaboration everyone. I am going to try to credit everyone I think did significant work, but if I skipped you, it was inadvertantly... please accept my sincere apologies. (and drop Lar a note, I'll sort it) ++Larbot - run by User:Lar - t/c 14:38, 2 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
