The FAS link says the vehicle does not protect against artillery fragments. Hmm... --24.118.77.253 18:06, 10 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, it says it can be penetrated by artillery fragments. This is true for all lightly-armoured vehicles. Michael Z. 2005-12-10 18:34 Z
So...are we agreeing? --24.118.77.253 23:01, 13 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

The BRDM-1 llink brings us right back around to the BRDM-2 page. Er...

We should probably move this article to BRDM (also currently redirecting here), since these are not highly-differentiated models. Any objections? Michael Z. 2005-12-27 19:43 Z
[edit]

The BRDM-3 is totally different,it's tracked. Dudtz 1/13/05 10:10 PM EST

No, it's not: it's a recce version of the BTR-80A. -- dendirrek (talk) 20:56, 16 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Merge from BRDM-1

[edit]

I've suggested that the article BRDM-1 be merged into this one. The vehicles are not identical, but they are a series, very similar in construction and employment. They can be merged into one comprehensive article, and someday when it grows large, the individual models and variants can be spun off into high-quality articles. Any objections? Michael Z. 2006-10-19 15:31 Z

  • Object. 1.They look totally differently (turret), 2.BRDM-1 is almost obsolete and not used, variants of BRDM-2 are still in use and will be for some time. 3. They have a different internall design: BRDM-1 engine in the front, BRDM-2 engine in the rear. Mieciu K 20:04, 19 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hm, true, although the turret is a detail (versions of both vehicles had different armament configurations). But they are based on the same chassis, and used in the same roles, reconnaissance, NBC recce, and antitank. They were even called BTR-40P and BTR-40PB, respectively. Michael Z. 2006-10-20 07:56 Z

Variants

I added a list of variants, listed per country. -- dendirrek (talk) 20:57, 16 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

APC misconception

[edit]

Hello.

It came to my attention that many people keep on classifying BRDM-1 and BRDM-2 armoured scout cars as APCs. It's true that BRDM-2 can take two soldiers on board (although it's not easy because of the cramped interior of the BRDM-2 (this problem was solved in Polish BRDM-2M-96 and it's successors and Ukrainian BRDM-2D)). However that doesn't make it an APC! APC is a vehicle which primary function is to transport soldiers on to the battlefield and give them limited armour protection hence their name is Armoured Personnel Carriers. If you want a genuine example of an APC, see M113 or BTR-60. BRDM-2's primary function is to carry out reconnaissance operations. Therefore it's an armoured scout car! It can hardly transport anyone. - SuperTank17 (talk) 16:02, 14 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Zbik-P

[edit]

In the section about Polish variants the following is written: "BRDM-2M-97C "Żbik-P" - BRDM-2M-97 "Żbik-B" with footplate over side episcopes." I don't think that's correct. As far as I know, the Zbik-P is the air-defence variant with ASRAD system. dendirrek (talk) 16:28, 8 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Greetings!

[edit]

Even it's a minor AFV, the BRDM-2 page is one of the best, if not the best, of all in wikipedia. Such marvellous photos and structure all around! This should deserve to be a featured article!--Stefanomencarelli (talk) 12:25, 9 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hello fellow Wikipedians,

I have just added archive links to one external link on BRDM-2. Please take a moment to review my edit. If necessary, add {{cbignore}} after the link to keep me from modifying it. Number produced is too low!

[edit]

The total number produced is blatalantly too low: wikipedia says 7,200. But it's not so! Let's look to SIPRI registers and we can find numbers much more impressive.

Just few examples: DDR: 1,579 BRDM-2s. Hungary: 350; India, 600; Irak, 250; Poland: 700 (smaller than wiki sources); Syria, 1,000. This totals usually doesn't count the AT or SAM versions of the BRDM-2. Despite this, there are already well over 4,000 examples, plus many hundreds more of AT or SAM models, totalizing easily over 5,000 examples. And those are only the main costurmes, just imagine another 32+ costumers even with smaller orders. So the total is over 7,000 exported, some of them (but not all!) are second-hand, but still is easily that BRDM-2 are atleast 50% more than wiki reports. Of course, URSS/Russia has not exported all the amount they made. Even in 2011, Russia had over 2,000 BRDM-2s, so go figure if the total number could have been less than the previous BRDM-1: probabily atleast 11,000 examples is an extimate most accurate. The export datas speaks cleary about it.
