A bit too light maybe?

[edit]

If you double an object's length, the volume will be eight times the size of that object. Given that fact, I believe, that the Mass of the Babylon 5 Station cannot possibly be correct.

For instance:

If you upsized the Saturn V Rocket (roughly the same shape as Babylon 5) to 5 Miles in length, it would be 72 times as long, as the original Saturn V. Fully loaded, it would have the mass of 1119744000 tons. Even if you didn't fill up the tanks, it would still have a mass far greater than 2.5 million tons.

So if that Station is 5 miles in length, it's much too light. Can anyone correct that figure?

Whatever the figure is, it should be cited. Given that the station is constructed ~250 years from now, who knows what the construction materials actually are? Maybe they're lighter or stronger than anything we actually use currently. Schoop (talk) 21:27, 10 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
If you double the lenght of a cylinder, you will double its weight. It will not get heavier by a factor of 8 - this goes for a sphere. Still Babylon 5 is most likly to light. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 37.209.42.214 (talk) 21:11, 23 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Quite to the contrary, the figure given on the page was far too much. The opening theme monologue for Season 1 says "Humans and aliens, wrapped in two million, five hundred thousand tons of spinning metal" http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=lP8B8IhC-58#t=23s 14.202.32.28 (talk) 06:47, 21 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Assuming a tensile stress of 1000 MPa in the wall (prestressed steel strands have 1650 MPa yield strength (where plastic deformation begins; Yield_(engineering)#Typical_yield_and_ultimate_strengths) we get t=Pr/(2s)=100,000 Pa * 240 m /(2*1000 MPa)=0.012 m wall thickness (Cylinder_stress). (240 m)^2*pi - (240-0.012 m)^2*pi = 18.095 m2 wall crosssectional area. 18.095 m2 * 8047 m * 7850 kg/m3 = 1,143,050,299 kg wall mass. That's 46% of 2.5 million tons (say 50% including the end caps), so there's mass left for other stuff or a thicker cylinder wall. Remember that's only the 'spinning metal'. To that we add people, gardens (?), air, etc. Air is (240 m)^2 * pi * 8047 m * 1.2 kg/m3 = 1.75 milllion t (70% of 'spinning metal', assuming there's just air inside), people are 250,000 * 70 kg = 17.5 million t (0.7% of spinning metal). I'd estimate the total mass to be 5 million t. Looks like they did the math. Darsie42 (talk) 16:47, 21 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Other Sections

[edit]

Now that there is content about Downbelow, shouldn't there be little blurbs talking about the other sections too? The article is quite lopsided without them, I think.

Last appearance..

[edit]

Just a note: Hope you dont mind but i changed it to be its final appearance only, also you dont need to metion the series it belongs to as it will be said on the episode page .

Also, i applied a small fix to "Lurkers guide..." so it doesnt double line. thanks/Fenton, Matthew Lexic Dark 52278 Alpha 771 22:52, 15 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Good changes, but the question then is what is the "final" appearence of B5? The Crusade episode was produced after B5 ended, but Sleeping takes place after it. Koweja 22:56, 15 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm.. I suppose it would be the last one seen IRL.. but i can certainly see your point, hehe. thanks/Fenton, Matthew Lexic Dark 52278 Alpha 771 22:58, 15 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

information for chart

[edit]
  1. Did they ever give the radius of the station? I keep thinking that they menioned it in one episode, but I might be mistaken.
  2. Are there multiple fusion reactors?
  3. Besides the starfurries and lifepods, what support craft does the station have?

Koweja 22:53, 15 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  1. Not in seasons 1, 2, or 3, or any of the movies that I'm aware of. I don't have seasons 4 or 5 to check them.
  2. Unknown, but when referenced, 'Fusion Reactor' is always used in the singular to my knowledge, and usually with a 'the', implying only one.
  3. 3. Maint/secure bots. Small, unmanned craft that throughout the series mostly function as external cameras. They seem to be partially automated, being given instructions and then automatically executing them('Thirdspace' illustrates this most clearly, but a few of the episodes support it), rather than being remotely piloted. They're shown equipped with a pair of grapple arms, though I don't recall them ever being used. In several episodes, but most especially the season 1 episodes 'Babylon Squared' and the two part 'Voice in the Wilderness', it is strongly suggested that they have their own contingent of shuttles, space-only as well as atmospheric. A civilian 'Starfury' variant is seen being used in 'Thirdspace' for exterior construction and hauling, though if it was Babylon 5's is open to interpretation. They also have the old standby of fairly ordinary spacesuits, as well as thruster packs for them(Seen especially in the movie 'Thirdspace'). Guys in spacesuits are often seen carrying out various tasks in the space sequences shown just prior to and just after the commercial breaks in many episodes. Also seen in these, but it is unknown if they are part of the station's contingent, are small pods with a pair of grapple arms, that appear to be used similar to tugboats, especially for Zero-G cargo docking.

  1. It is possible to calculate the radius from some information given in one of the last S2 episodes, when Sheridan jumped from the exploding monorail and was saved by Kosh. However, that information seems to be wrong (or my calculations are wrong): Ivanova says that he would hit the ground at about 65km/h, and if we assume this to be the rotational speed of the ring, and if we further assume earth-like gravity on the "inside" of the ring, this would mean that the radius is only about 40m. At least for that particular section (since the radius is not equal throughout the station, there must be rings rotating at different speeds, or otherwise the simulated gravity would be very different between the various parts) --Darkstar (talk) 13:11, 1 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Merge of Downbelow

[edit]

It would be a good fit, especially as the Babylon 5 station page expands. Downbelow would fit perfectly as it's a section of the station. Radagast83 21:30, 18 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've no objection at all, i decided to wait a little while though, its a great idea, would you like to merge it or would you like me to (-: ? thanks/Fenton, Matthew Lexic Dark 52278 Alpha 771 21:33, 18 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah waiting is good. If there are no objections in the next few days whoever gets to it first can do it. haha. Radagast83 22:07, 18 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Go for it. Both articles are pretty short so there really is need to have two. Koweja 22:57, 18 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sectors

[edit]

Admittedly its been a long time since i've watched the series from start to finish so I could be wrong about this but here goes.

The way the sectors are described here seem to me to be totally at odds with what was described during the series for instance wasn't Red Sector the commercial zone of Babylon 5, if memory serves the Zocolo is in red 15 which would tend to back this up and also i'm sure Green Sector was described as the ambassadorial wing and that is why it's restricted to ambassadors, their staff and station personel. I'm also sure Mr Garribaldi said in "Grey 17 is Missing" that Grey sector was the industrial zone of the station and i've never heard of Yellow Sector. Internal layout

[edit]

I'm trying to understand the layout of the station. The station rotates to produce gravity, but the C&C post seems to be fixed, therefore have no gravity, located as it is on one end of the station. But C&C seems to have normal gravity!

The best I can come up with is that each sector - blue, red, green, brown, etc. - are stacked side by side, and the levels are like tree rings around the low-gravity central core of the station, part of which is where ships enter and exit the station's freight and passenger bays. Brown sector was not completed to the outer core, hence "down below" part of it. If you walk on one level, on a non-curving passageway, you would pass through all sectors. If you walk on one level, on a curving passageway perpendicular to the other, you will completely circumnavigate one sector.

Is this correct? GBC (talk) 09:42, 3 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Italicizing place names

[edit]

Last I heard, in English we italicize names of works like movies or TV series, but we do not italicize the names of places, fictional or otherwise. Would we italicize Mars or Deneb 4? Anyone? --Aladdin Sane (talk) 23:27, 1 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Computer Graphics?

[edit]

Shouldn't be a section in the article describing the computer model used for rendering the "space station", and maybe its poor appearance? CUSH 16:39, 9 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Affiliation

[edit]

In the Last Episode (5/22) a guy said that the station returned to the earth (and they shut it down becouse of budget and uselessnes). So could somebody add in the infobox that the last owner was the Earth again, but i'm not sure if its the "Earth Allianz" because in this time its just the earth government, because the mars and so on is independent. COuld somebody check that up? tanks —Preceding unsigned comment added by 79.207.83.174 (talk) 21:39, 24 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Major MOS:INUNIVERSE problems including WP:NOT#PLOT and failing to establish WP:NOTABILITY. (The merge target might have to be renamed List of starcrafts in Babylon 5 for this.) Via in-universe trimming and sourced real-world info expansion, the current topic might become a proper WP:SPINOUT article in the future, but barely anything of the current material would survive. – sgeureka tc 15:28, 21 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
