Historical use of poverty weed[edit]

Poverty weed, baccharis neglecta, is a fascinating plant I learned about 20 years ago. Your current article on it describes it well, but doesn't mention its history.

Which includes being used during the US great depression years to help stabilize soil in bad need of it due to the farming methods used then combined with the dire weather conditions. Hence, the many common names one hears: depression weed, Roosevelt weed, poverty weed, false willow, new-deal weed.
