I have removed the statement that the kirk has historical connections with the covenanters. The covenanter cause was disbanded almost a hundred years before Balmaghie kirk was built, and so a connection is illogical - can someone provide a reference otherwise? sprocketonline (talk) 10:14, 27 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

In the graveyard of Balmaghie kirk there is a gravestone for two Covenanters, both called David Halliday. In "The Kirk Above Dee Water" by Rev. H.M.B. Reid, published by Adam Rae, Castle Douglas, 1895 [reprinted in 1994] page 34, the ddication on the gravestone is given;

Here lies David Halliday, portioner of Miefield, who was shot upon the 20 of Fbr. 1685, and David Halliday,once in Glengape, who was likewise shot upon the 11 of July 1685 , for their adherence to the principles of Scotland's Covenanted Reformation.

The same source also mentions that a fragment of the old kirk (demolished when the new kirk of 1794 was built)survives in the graveyard and that this old kirk is associated with the Rev. John McMillan 1669-1753 who became minister to the Cameronians in 1706.The Cameronians took their name from Richard Cameron, the Covenanter who was killed in 1680, and were in 1706 the surviving remnant of the Covenanters.
