The result of the proposal was do not move.--Yannismarou (talk) 18:01, 8 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Bank Street (Ottawa)Bank Street — This was an uncontroversial proposal that was reverted by a user from New York City, after he googled "Bank Street" and only came up with "Bank Street College of Education", which lead him to believe it was the primary use. Google tailors their results to your locale, that's why it happened. This college is by no means the primary use, in fact, the primary use of "Bank Street" is Ottawa's Bank Street. Even if the other uses were anywhere near notable, the names are completely different, and could not be confused. A hatnote to the disambiguation page, Bank Street (disambiguation) would clear up any possible misunderstanding. — Pwnage8 (talk) 23:21, 30 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Survey

[edit]
Feel free to state your position on the renaming proposal by beginning a new line in this section with *'''Support''' or *'''Oppose''', then sign your comment with ~~~~. Since polling is not a substitute for discussion, please explain your reasons, taking into account Wikipedia's naming conventions.
  • Support per Pwnage8 - the current disambig setup tends to overly promote a small college rather than the straightforward meaning of Bank Street. Dl2000 (talk) 23:55, 30 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose No evidence presented that this particular street is the primary meaning. JPG-GR (talk) 03:01, 31 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose. per JPG-GR. Proposer claims "the primary use of "Bank Street" is Ottawa's Bank Street.", yet presents no evidence for such a claim. Simon12 (talk) 03:36, 31 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
    • Comment you're both kidding, right? The only evidence you have for primary use of that college no one has heard of is a google search tailored to your area. For comparison, my google search only turns up one hit for the college, the rest being related to Bank Street. We're talking about Ottawa's Yonge Street here, with no other Bank Street anywhere close to notable enough for an article. Even if it was not the primary use, for the purpose of discussion, it's the straightforward meaning, because there are no other articles under the name "Bank Street". It's the only logical name for the page. Wikipedia does not require articles to be disambiguated unless there are two or more pages with the same name. So opposing the move just because it may not be the primary use is not a good argument. --Pwnage8 (talk) 17:20, 31 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
      • Reply. Bank Street College of Education is primarily known as Bank Street. Anyone coming to Wikipedia for information on the college is likely to type in Bank Street. Also, I am not claiming, in this discussion, that the college is the primary use of Bank Street. I'm only claiming that given the US Google results, your claim that Bank Street (Ottawa) is the primary use of Bank Street needs to be supported. Your request to move the page specifically says the primary use of "Bank Street" is Ottawa's Bank Street. We've reasonably asked for evidence for that claim. Also, if Bank Street (Ottawa) did not exist, I would make a page called Bank Street and put the College page there, as that is how most people refer to it. Given we have a disambig page there, there's no need for me to do that, but the claim that "because there are no other articles under the name "Bank Street"" is another reason to move Bank Street (Ottawa) to Bank Street also is not sufficient in my opinion.Simon12 (talk) 19:39, 31 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
        • Reply If that's the case, the hatnote will take care of it. The only reason it's disambiguated at all is because all Ottawa roads once were, whether they had to be or not. --Pwnage8 (talk) 20:54, 31 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
      • I'm not saying that Bank Street College of Education is the primary meaning - I'm saying that Bank Street (Ottawa) is not the primary mearning, or at least that no evidence has been provided showing that it is. JPG-GR (talk) 02:46, 4 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Weak Oppose. I very reluctantly oppose, but it has nothing to do with the college, which is properly disambiguated under its current title. I'm more concerned with other articles that could properly claim the title "Bank Street", especially Bank Street (stadium), which gets more than half the views of Bank Street (Ottawa), but also to a much lesser extent Bank Street (Manhattan), Bank Street, Hyderabad and Bank Street, Worcestershire, as well as other Bank Streets that are mentioned in various articles. It's a close call but I think the Ottawa street doesn't quite meet WP:PRIMARYUSAGE. User:Dl2000 is correct about the dab page but that should be corrected there. Station1 (talk) 08:41, 2 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose I doubt the Ottawa street is primary usage throughout the English-speaking world, whatever may be true in Canada. There are innumerable Bank Streets which don't and shouldn't have articles; there's one in the town I'm typing in; but they don't all fit in the 10% of usage which primary usage would leave. Septentrionalis PMAnderson 18:44, 2 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose. No facts presented for a primary use. And for the record, I have not heard of either of the two that seem to have sparked this discussion. Vegaswikian (talk) 18:53, 3 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose Bank Street in Ottawa can not be considered the main use of Bank Street, keep as a DAB.--Kelapstick (talk) 19:57, 4 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Is proposer willing to withdraw the Requested Move, as a consensus opposing the move has formed? Simon12 (talk) 03:35, 5 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

If anyone is interested... Ontario Highway 31 / Bank st. From Wellington to Highway 2 is 75km in length... not sure if anyone would be interested in a trivial fact like that? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 198.103.96.11 (talk) 14:32, 4 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It's a good fact for the infobox, but where did you get this figure from? - ʄɭoʏɗiaɲ τ ¢ 14:47, 4 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
