"He did, also, go frequently to the YMCA, and its affiliate the Bantu Mens' Social Club, at No 1 Eloff Street." Source Is it affiliated with the YMCA from the start? Lsjzl 18:40, 17 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • I have come across some possible links: a. the Jan H. Hofmeyr School of Social Work for black Africans was housed in the Social Centre building between 1941 and 1947; b. Max Yergan, and African-American who organized on behalf of the YMCA in South Africa, had envisioned such training for black Africans in 1932; c. a building constructed under Yergan's initiative at Fort Hare was sold and the funds used for the Jan H. Hofmeyr School of Social Work; d. the School was initially started to train social workers for the YMCA. See Alan Cobley's book in the reference section of the article for detail.

Category

[edit]

I'm not convinced about my categorization. If someone knows more about the group and can put it in the correct place... Thanks Lsjzl 18:33, 17 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Question

[edit]

Is this place still operating? What is the current status of it? Lsjzl 03:53, 18 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • The University of the Witwatersrand has records dating from 1923–1975, but I am not sure whether 1975 represents the date at which the Centre ceased to exist. DocDee 05:08, 18 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
