Does anyone know the story behind the demolition of the Sunday school and manse? It's relatively rare that we see a significant chunk of a QHR site knocked down, for reasons other than demolition by neglect, after the date of a QHR listing. It's not that uncommon for church manses not to be included in listings, but it seems likely that the Sunday school would have been, and it'd make for an interesting addition to the history section if someone could dig up sources on what happened. The most obvious solution is that the 2006 heritage listing was only for the church and not the manse and sunday school. If McDonalds had knocked down a heritage-listed structure, there would be some outcry which would show up somewhere on the WWW (and I cannot find any such outcry). Given the church was a target of vandalism and presumably an eyesore, it seems likely to me that a deal was struck that redevelopment of the site was allowed if the purchaser agreed to allow the church to be heritage-listed and restored to a civic purpose at their expense. That would be consistent with this. I think a number of things end up on the heritage register as part of a redevelopment deal like that (a win for the developer, a win for heritage, a win for the community).
