User:Parkwells has made some great improvements to the article today. Just wanting to check a couple for discussion:

  • "A relationship such as that between Minnie and Weir was illegal" has become "Under the anti-miscegenation racial laws of the time, their relationship was illegal". However, the cited source doesn't mention the types of laws.
  • "she was placed in a series of foster homes, in Alice Springs, Victoria, and then Darwin" has become "In the government's program to assimilate aboriginal children, Weir was placed in a series of foster homes with British-Australian couples, in Alice Springs, Victoria, and Darwin", where she received some limited education." Again, I don't think the source say anything about it being an assimilation program, or the ethnic identity of the foster parents, and I'm not sure it mentions education.
  • "Weir first painted in 1989, and was one of a group of ten Utopia women who travelled to study batik in Indonesia in 1994." has become "Weir's activism led her to explore Aboriginal artistic traditions. She first painted in 1989 and became a recognized artist. Five years later in 1994..." I don't think the source indicates that there was a link between her activism and her decision to explore those artistic traditions. Also, I also don't think she became a recognised artist between 89 and 94 - thta came later.

Any additional references or tweaks would be useful. hamiltonstone (talk) 21:21, 26 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, thanks for your comments. Yes, I may be getting ahead of those sources, but was adding context based on what I knew about the state of Australia at the time (and can find sources to support the statements). Will go further with sources but was trying to map it out to provide more info for people not familiar with conditions.Parkwells (talk) 13:05, 27 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Parkwells. Your most recent edits look to have addressed all of my concerns, and have made the article much better. At some stage I will get around to adding more on her artistic career, as I have most of those sources. But probably not just at the moment. Great job! hamiltonstone (talk) 23:31, 27 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
