I enjoy living in Barrow County. My child enjoys attending our local elementary school. There is a policy for children who ride the bus. There is a policy for children who go to after school care. But there is NO policy for children who walk home.

My child's school makes my child wait until all the car riders, bus riders, and teachers kids have left before releasing the "walkers". There is a policy that states if you live within a certain mileage (I believe less than 1 mile) from the school, you should be a car rider or walker as the bus is not supposed to be an option. The bus is not supposed to be an option when you live that close to the school, but the bus runs to neighborhoods that are literally across the street. This is just an example of the way our school and maybe the system thinks.

The school has a policy that no child can be checked out between 2:00 and 2:20 pm. Car riders can begin loading their children at 2:30 and they are typically complete by 2:50. This means that my child is released at 2:00 from class and then sits in the gymnasium until 2:50 before the teachers will allow the release of my child to an authorized person. When their policy is questioned, they try to quote the "early release" policy which only applies to releases before 2:20 pm. Clearly, that policy doesn't apply here.

One would think that a walker could be released at 2:20 pm to an authorized adult and sent on their merry way. It would be one less child to maintain.

This non-policy policy should be made into an official policy to allow for "walkers" to be released between 2:20 and 2:30. There aren't many who walk, but soon it will catch on. Barrow County has indicated that they have an initiative to promote healthy activities to fight childhood obesity, also to be more green (less car producing pollutants) and actually wants to promote more walkers.

Doesn't their lack of policy negate what they are supposedly trying to encourage? ForeverCookieMom (talk) 20:26, 10 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
