Comment[edit]

Could you point out where basilicas are automatically notable? I don't see it in places like Wikipedia:Notability (architecture). Thanks. Clubmarx (talk) 15:38, 25 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Basilicas are special churches, with the title conferred upon them by papal brief; consequently, I'd argue that their special nature is enough to make them notable. I believe there are fewer than 1500 in the world...it's not a status easily achieved. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 15:48, 25 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
There are 1541 basilicas in the world, and one third of them are in Italy. I agree with Ser Amantio. Basilicas are designated due to some historical or architectual significance. I do not claim to always know this significance, but I am creating stubs so that those that do have a place to put the information.Npeters22 (talk) 16:40, 25 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I don't see this mentioned in WP:CHURCH or other notability wiki pages. When you removed the notability tag, I assumed you meant that there was a particular wiki notability rule about this. Also, this article in particular is a minor basilica. All pages need to be about notable subjects. Clubmarx (talk) 17:34, 25 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Minor basilicas are included in the "fewer than 1500" I mentioned - they still require special designation by the Pope. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 19:52, 25 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Under the notability guidelines for local churches and religious congregations ( WP:CHURCH), basilicas would be notable by at least two of the criteria listed. First the general criteria, indicated that most congregations and places of religious worship are notable enough for mentioning on Wikipedia and more specifically, under point 11. "The congregation building has particular architectural and/or historic significance." Many basilicas meet additional criteria, of course, but all would seem to meet this minimum level. Finally, many basilicas (although not this one) are also cathedrals. Under Note 2, Roman Catholic Cathedrals are notable.Npeters22 (talk) 20:44, 25 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
