A word of caution[edit]

Before seeing this article I had no knowledge of the "assembly", but it seems to me its organizers are rather bold to use the words "people's assembly" and to say they want to provide "a democratic forum for Bath" and "put democracy into action". Bath, like the rest of the country, is part of a remarkably free and open society based on representative democracy. Apart from electing members to the B&NES unitary authority, the House of Commons, and the European Parliament, processes are available for petitions, parish polls, access to information, referenda on whether to have a directly-elected mayor, and so on. The role of a self-selecting body like this is surely to encourage individuals to use their existing democratic rights effectively. There will be local elections in Bath next May and I wonder if this group may prove to be relevant to those? In the mean time, I am inclined to doubt whether it is notable.
