Merger suggestion[edit]

Regarding the numerous requests for mergers in the Richmond-Petersburg campaign series, I would recommend that we do not do so. We have based our article classification on the National Park Service's American Battlefield Protection Program. See http://www.cr.nps.gov/hps/abpp/battles/bycampgn.htm. Furthermore, there are two detailed secondary sources that we frequently use as references for these battle articles, both of which adhere to this classification:

  • Kennedy, Frances H., ed., The Civil War Battlefield Guide, 2nd ed., Houghton Mifflin Co., 1998, ISBN 0-395-74012-6.
  • Salmon, John S., The Official Virginia Civil War Battlefield Guide, Stackpole Books, 2001, ISBN 0-8117-2868-4.

The latter work has very detailed multi-page descriptions of these battles, including maps. Someday, some enterprising Wikipedia editors will take advantage of this detail and flesh out the articles beyond their current skimpy state. Hal Jespersen 01:10, 4 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • I also endorse using the National Park Service as the authority, though I'd be glad to hear other academic source alternatives. Some of these merger requests (if enacted) are egregiously misleading. I'm currently working my way through the calendar for This week in American Civil War history, and the subject of these mergers has become of some importance to the portal section. Since there's been very little discussion on the merges, I'm going to delete merger tags (and expand if necessary) as best I am able, and as the NPS references designate. I welcome assistance as I go. BusterD 13:56, 1 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I agree...these should not be merged. Each of these battles deserves their own piece of cyberspace. CsikosLo (talk) 15:31, 27 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
