Translation from Spanish

[edit]

I have completed work on improving the translation of this article from Spanish.

The original Spanish was apparently originally copied from a text possibly 19th century (or maybe a school text book) with a heavy bias towards the Spanish view of this battle. It gives the impression that the Spanish and French are still at war. It starts off reasonably well but becomes more and more emotive and biased towards the end of the article. For this reason I decline to work on the last three sections as it is simply emotive twaddle.

I have attempted to neutralise the bias as far as possible by changing "the enemy" to "the French" and "us" to "the Spanish" and to neutralise references to the glory and bravery of the Spanish Army however what is left is still a heavily one sided account of the battle and still leaves the reader with little idea of what actually happened.

There is also no section explaining the context of the battle and its importance in the overall Peninsular Wars. I have included a section heading where I think this should go.

I recommend doing no further work on editing or improving translation of this article until a completely new better-researched article is written - whether in Spanish, French or English. The current French version (translated from Spanish) wisely stops halfway through at the point where the bias becomes unbearable (and from where there are no further references).

In my view the article should be much shorter and focus on the actual events. The battle was after all only 7 hours long.

As there seems little interest in the problems in this article I have done a new article based on a more neutral source. It is substantially shorter than before however this seems in proportion to to the brevity of the battle. I would have preferred to have more sources - especially to have had access to Oman's work - however anybody can expand the article from other sources if appropriate.
