Edit suggestion / is this normal?[edit]

I'm not sure if it's normal to not include them, but with all the slating he gets, it seems purposefully harsh (and thus biased if not consistent across all footballers) to not mention that he's actually scored 2 goals in competitive games for United, as mentioned in the body. Why is this not in the goal stats? Am I to believe, as per the note that the record only includes league goals, that the record breaking number of goals that Messi has scored in the Champions league are also not included in his goal stats? Notability?[edit]

He hasn't even played a game, don't think he warrants a page? Lushhhhhhhh (talk) 21:32, 11 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I think this is how Manchester United fans tackle the absurdity of buying an 8th striker, a completely unheard of player who just five weeks ago was playing in the Portuguese third division, for possibly £7.4 million. I wouldn't vote for keeping the article at the moment, but he'll surely deserve it by winter, so it'll just be revived later. Hazlzz (talk) 22:19, 11 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Buddhist?[edit]

It's not mentioned in any of the sources. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.229.82.199 (talk) 22:09, 11 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Kept trying to revert edits but kept on sending me back to the edit page because of more vandalism, god it is realy frustrating when there is loads of grafite. --Liamtaylor007 (talk) 22:34, 11 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The line about attacking midfielder[edit]

needs citations or being removed, which fans consider him for of an attacking midfielder than a striker? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.23.206.33 (talk) 00:12, 12 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Ferguson implies he's a winger here: http://www.manutd.com/default.sps?pagegid={F9E570E6-407E-44BC-800F-4A3110258114}&newsid=6651360 - He lists various wingers to show why United are comfortable with the position in question, although he doesn't say this directly.94.170.90.42 (talk) 23:55, 13 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah but that was a recent article. Assumptions were made he was an attacking midfielder on the day he was signed when there was no evidence to back it up. We now have evidence. Lushhhhhhhh (talk) 10:05, 14 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Name[edit]

Should the page be called by his full name or is his nickname acceptable? Lushhhhhhhh (talk) 12:25, 18 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Per WP:COMMONNAME, his nickname is fine. By the way, according to this news report at Vitoria S.C.'s official website, his name is actually spelled with an accent on both Es, i.e. "Bébé". – PeeJay 17:33, 18 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the move request was: Not moved. Per Kotniski, only one source in favor of Bébé spelling vs countless others with Bebé spelling is not persuasive. Born2cycle (talk) 23:30, 12 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Requested move[edit]

BebéBébé (footballer) — According to this news report, the subject's name is spelled with an accent on both Es, i.e. Bébé. This goes against the assertion made in one of the previous moves that Portuguese words have only one accented letter per word, since the news report is written in Portuguese. Furthermore, since "Bébé" on its own is ambiguous, we need to add the "footballer" disambiguator. – PeeJay 10:42, 20 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I don't read Portuguese, so no opinion, but if there are really only two things to be disambiguated between, it would be more elegant to pick a primary topic, place it at the plain title, and handle the other with a hatnote; as opposed to have a rather useless disambiguation page. • Oppose, I don't know Portuguese, but Googling Portuguese sites reveals that the version with only one accent is much more common. One webpage (which may contain a misprint) can't make up for hundreds which go the other way.--Kotniski (talk) 19:09, 10 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Strong support this move or move to Bebé (footballer). I really don't care which; but it should be disambiguated from Bebe. Magog the Ogre (talk) 10:06, 11 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Worth Adding[edit]

Is it worth adding that he was overlooked for the reserve team due to poor performances in training? http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/25082010/58/premier-league-bebe-t-reserve-team.html Lushhhhhhhh (talk) 15:26, 25 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

To be honest, I don't think so. Ole Solskjaer named a lot of first-teamers in the squad for the game, so there might not have been space for Bebe in the squad even if he was training well. Furthermore, foreigners often take time to settle in a new country, and considering he only signed within the last couple of weeks, I think it'd be fair to give him some leeway. – PeeJay 20:37, 25 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Ah fair play, after posting this I thought that too D: Lushhhhhhhh (talk) 22:19, 26 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Clearly such reports are no more than speculation and do not deserve a mention on Wikipedia. Look at the official response from Alex Ferguson, who has branded such reports as "vicious attack":[1]. We need to be careful about the sources we use.Craddocktm (talk) 11:18, 27 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

U21 debut[edit]

Below is the talk on my talk page regarding Bebe's Portugal U21 debut. I thought I'd post it here to allow others to contribute as well:

Nah but everyone has said that it was a disappointing debut... I just picked that one as Bebe had a comment on it Lushhhhhhhh (talk) 20:14, 4 September 2010 (UTC)

  • Earlier I removed the sentence that Bebe had a disappointing debut mainly due to verifiability, which stipulates that material on Wikipedia must be published by reliable sources. As far as I know, the only papers that have run stories on Bebe's U21 debut are the Daily Mail and the Sun. In my opinion, both are tabloids with a bit but not much reliability. I would be happy to quote them for facts but not opinion. In particular, the Daily Mail's earlier report on Bebe's absence from the reserves [2] has been discredited by Alex Ferguson: [3].
  • Another issue is the correct interpretation of the sources. While the Daily Mail was critical about his performance, the same author wrote that "the signs are encouraging":[4].
  • Another concern is WP:weasel. Precisely who described it as a disappointing debut?
  • As a compromising solution, I think it is acceptable if the comment on his debut is clearly attributed to the Daily Mail and the Sun.
  • I feel we need not include Bebe's interview responses in the article. Players give interviews all the time, and in terms of content the quote carries no significance.Craddocktm (talk) 03:07, 5 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

New Requested Move[edit]

BebéBébé (footballer) — If anybody watched Bebe's debut against Scunthorpe, the printed name on his shirt reads "Bébé". I haven't got any photos capturing it, but a number of videos comfirm this, such as: [5] (1:25). Also taking into account this news report, it means that the clubs he has played for all agree that his name is Bébé and not Bebé. One should bear in mind that his clubs are the most reliable sources - which means they should be accorded much more weight than other sources. Per WP:UCN, articles should be titled using the name which is most commonly used to refer to the subject of the article in English-language reliable sources. Therefore, previous discussions that make reference to Portuguese Google Search results are incompatible with WP policy. A search on Google reveals that English sources are about equally divided about his correct name. But then, to rely on Google search is always misleading - many of the returned results are not about Bebe the footballer at all.Craddocktm (talk) 04:10, 23 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • Support - It seems that his name doesn't conform to Portuguese grammatical rules, but since when has that mattered. His name is Bébé, so the article should be at Bébé (footballer). – PeeJay 20:01, 24 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose - All that proves is that Brits can't spell Portuguese. Try: http://www.google.com/search?&q=bebe+manchester+united+site:.pt --Nricardo (talk) 23:51, 24 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
    • Why would Bébé allow his own name to be misspelled on his own shirt? – PeeJay 00:07, 25 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
      • Literacy is not a job requirement for footballers. --Nricardo (talk) 00:20, 25 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
        • It's his name! It's nothing to do with being literate. If there weren't supposed to be two accents, he would have said something. Perhaps the best thing to do would be to wait until he plays again, but that could be weeks or even months away! – PeeJay 00:26, 25 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
          • Nricardo has wrongly applied WP policy. WP:UCN makes it absolutely clear that it is English-language reliable sources that count, not Portuguese sources! And it is absolutely ridiculous to suggest that the guy cannot spell his own name and that he has to rely on the papers to spell it for him!Craddocktm (talk) 02:26, 25 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
            • Often players with "ethnic names" have improper diacritics applied to their English jersey's. I can't say this is common in soccer; but several NBA players have their names written incorrectly. 174.26.189.54 (talk) 09:58, 13 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
              • Any reliable sources to support your claim? I consider it extraordinary that players would persistently wear the same jersey that has got their own name wrong.Craddocktm (talk) 10:15, 13 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
    • Moved due to the uses of the name Bébé in the offical match against Sunderland on October 2nd.
        – HonorTheKing (talk) 16:22, 2 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose - If his nickname was some kind of invention, it could be "Bébé" or anything else. But the article itself says that his nickname means "baby" in Portuguese. Therefore, please spell Portuguese words correctly: "baby" in Portuguese is "bebé". 85.241.8.157 (talk) 13:47, 19 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
