CCHT external link[edit]

This link was added to the article after discussion on the WP Reliable Sources Noticeboard. See: WP:RSN exercise. No information from the CCHT link has been put into the body of the article in the form of citations because it has not yet been verified for 100% accuracy by the Victoria County History project for Cumbria. (This will take some years to do). Laplacemat (talk) 10:04, 09 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Beckermet village...[edit]

Stick 02:03, 17 September 2007 (UTC)Can hardly be described as a city. I grew up nearby and frequently cycled down to Beckermet to play in the beck (small river) that flows under a bridge in the center of the village. At that time Beckermet still had a train station and a village store. I don't think the village store exists any more but last time I visited there was still a post office, a service station and two pubs.

Most of the buildings are old and built of local sandstone. In the village church of St John's are the remains of Viking grave slabs. Originally a farming community the opening up of the local iron ore mines brought some temporary wealth and some large sandstone houses. Nestled in a little valley at the confluence of two Becks (hence the name Beckermet) the village is quite picturesque.

Beckermet Inscription[edit]

Though the cross inscription is said to be "runic" in fact there is an image in an article by Dr Christopher Brooke which was done with an enhanced imaging technique which shows the script to by Latin, although the bottom line could still be runic as it is not so clear. The lettering looks to my inexpert eye very similar to that on some 9th Century Pictish crosses. Barcud Coch (talk) 09:07, 18 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
