Co-ordinates

[edit]

I have repeatedly returned to the problem of providing approximate co-ordinates for this article. I now think I have an answer. Although Martha Buck gives a placemark on her map, I don't think it's accurate, and it may be that the exact location is deliberately kept vague by such means. My apologies if that's the case, because I am about to explain where I think it really is, and how I came to that conclusion. "A Type Catalog of Fossil Invertebrates (Arthropoda:Trilobita) in the Yale Peabody Museum" gives the type locality of Acidaspis trentonensis as "Late Ordovician, Frankfort Shale. 10 mm thick bed of black shale, about 30 in above stream bed, on N bank of Sixmile Creek in Cleveland's Glen, near Rome, Oneida Co., New York, USA. Collector: Beecher, C.E. and Nason, F.L., 7/1893". This seems to be Beecher's trilobite bed; all the details fit. http://mapserver.mytopo.com/ lists 9 occurrences of "Sixmile Creek" in New York state, only one of which could reasonably be described as "near Rome, Oneida Co." It runs in a south-westerly direction from the slopes of South Hill, before turning to the south-east and passing through Griffiss International Airport, before emptying into the Erie Canal just within the limits of the Town of Floyd. (The proximity to a former military installation may be another reason why the precise location was not easy to uncover.) I feel a rock outcrop is more likely in a steep-sided valley, and those parts of the creek are also orientated east-west, justifying the description of "on N bank". I have therefore given co-ordinates of somewhere in the middle of that section, at 43°14.2′N 75°23.5′W / 43.2367°N 75.3917°W / 43.2367; -75.3917. I cannot, however, find any reference on any map to "Cleveland's Glen"; if someone can find that, then that would clinch it. --Stemonitis (talk) 18:34, 22 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
