it is incorrect that the charter of Bet Hakerem banned having a synagogue. what was discussed is that the community should not pay for the synagogue and that those who wanted a synagogue should pay for its building and upkeep. As a matter of fact, one of the strongest opponents to the community paying for the synagogue was a founder and main supporter of the synagogue. the original synagogue was in the yellin teachers college and whose aron kodesh,and bima were designed by a famous artist of the community. information received from conversation with a member of the community who participated in said discussions. fred carroll
