GA Review[edit]

Article (edit | visual edit | history) · Article talk (edit | history) · Watch
Hi. Good work here, but the article is not yet ready for GA status. Please correct the following the issues:

  • The references need to be formatted properly. All web references should have at least the URL, page title, publisher, and access date.
  • Per WP:UNIT, all numbers should have non-breaking spaces between them and their unit of measurement.
  • The article is missing climate data.
  • The economy section is thin. This doesn't need to be a list of businesses, but can also include information such as what industries the town's population is employed in (are they mostly white collar workers, blue collar, etc.) and data such as unemployment rates.
  • The list of parks in the parks and recreation section seems unnecessary. Really, this section should be about recreation itself and parks themselves should only be mentioned if they're a significant focus of the community. For example, information about the little league team should be here.
  • While not wholly against Wikipedia policy, image galleries are frowned upon because they typically do not add to the understanding of the article.
  • No images should be left-aligned next top or under a section header (e.g. the image of the stop sign).
  • Images that are primarily vertical should be marked with the "upright" tag. For example, "Image:BellaireSigna.JPG|thumb|upright|Another sign..."
  • Other areas could be fleshed out per WP:USCITY. For example, are there any annual festivals or celebrations? Most of the information about the streetcar and bus lines should not be included in the city's history but rather should be included further down in a separate transportation section. And, if the streetcar is historic, that should probably be mentioned in the text as well as opposed to just in the image caption.
  • The main image should really be of the downtown main street or an overall shot of the town as opposed to just the water tower.
  • Consider removing the sub-headers, which are really unnecessary. Government can stand on its own, transportation can be fleshed out into its own separate heading and education doesn't need to be organized in such a hierarchical fashion.

I will put the article on hold for a week to allow time for improvements and corrections. I will have this page on my watchlist. Best, epicAdam(talk) 17:14, 18 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • I started revising this already. I may find difficulty finding specific climate data for Bellaire as it is physically a very small city and that newscasters and sources are more likely to simply get Houston's climate data (Bellaire is part of a group of small cities surrounded by Houston) -
  • There IS a Bellaire downtown, so I might get a shot of it at a later point. I will include some tell-tale street signs in the background so people know that it's definitely Bellaire.
  • The reason why I listed all of the parks is because Bellaire is a small city that is dominated by Houston; even though it is its own municipal government it also has characteristics of a neighborhood and a region within a larger city. I did move the little league stuff in the recreation section.

Hi. I see some of the changes you have made.
  • The reference for the employment data links back to an article about that Tejano singer. If I may make a suggestion, I would use the Census Bureau's American Community Survey link here for that type of data. It's much more accurate (Wikipedia really frowns on using city-data.com as its riddled with errors) and you won't have to separate out the data by sex. The ACS also has much more information you may find useful to include.
  • As for the climate data, you can just grab the information from Weather.com. They should have information (average temps, precipitation, etc.) specific to Bellair.
  • The biggest problem I have with a list of parks is that most people reading the article just don't care and clutters up what would otherwise be perfectly good prose. Unless you're going to provide some more details about each park that you've listed, providing a list for the sake of providing it doesn't make much sense.
  • Also, looking over the article, I would suggest cutting out a number of the pictures. As current, they are just all crowding over on the right side.

For the parks what I will do is simply have details for each park. The Bellaire City Government explains the features of each park. WhisperToMe (talk) 19:30, 18 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I added the park data and began using census data. I'll check out Weather.com in a sec. WhisperToMe (talk) 19:46, 18 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I added the weather data and I'll see what else I can do to flesh the article. WhisperToMe (talk) 23:53, 18 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

One more thing:

  • "Per WP:UNIT, all numbers should have non-breaking spaces between them and their unit of measurement." - In which cases is this happening in the article? For some reason I can't find where this is happening... WhisperToMe (talk) 18:17, 19 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
    • Hey Whisper, sorry for the delay. I've been very busy as of late. This isn't a case of where this is happening, but where it should be happening. For example, the text "Bellaire was founded on what was part of William Marsh Rice's 9,449 acre (38 km²) ranch. Baldwin surveyed the eastern 1,000 acres (4 km²) of the ranch into small truck farms" needs to have non-breaking spaces between the actual numerals and the measurement unit. See the examples at WP:NBSP. Best, epicAdam(talk) 17:56, 23 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
      • I have since added the non-breaking lines :) WhisperToMe (talk) 23:40, 2 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Excellent. I have promoted the article to GA. I would recommend getting rid of the gallery and expanding the lead (a bit) but I do not consider them to be a hindrance in getting to GA. Best, epicAdam(talk) 01:33, 27 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
