Valgetjärvi / Belozersk[edit]

The name Valgetjärvi (Valkeajärvi) means White Lake.

The main settlement area for Finno Ugrian Vepsä (Veps) tribe at least up to 1240. In fierce battles the Russians (Novgorodians) killed male population and resettled the area with Russians from Moscow area conquered by the Mongols. The women and children were taken slaves and were batpized to Orthodox Fate. In the period of 600 - 1100 Valgetjärvi was important crossroad for fur exports.
