Secular inspiration[edit]

According to Israel Joshua Singer, Feigenbaum's "conversion" [to atheism] was prompted by the discovery of his teacher, the Gerer rebbe, that Feigenbaum was not wearing tsitsit. His beating at the hands of the infuriated Hasidim spawned the anti-religious diatribes that subsequently became a fixture in the Yiddish press.
