Date of Publication of the Handbook of Pesticide Toxicology

[edit]

Doc James made this edit changing the publication date for the book reference:

Knowles, Charles O. (1991). "22.4.2 Benzyl Benzoate". In Hayes, Jr, Wayland J.; Laws, Jr., Edward R. (eds.). Handbook of Pesticide Toxicology, Volume 3: Classes of Pesticides. Academic Press. pp. 1505–1508. ISBN 9781483288635. Archived from the original on 20 December 2016. {{cite book}}: Unknown parameter |deadurl= ignored (|url-status= suggested) (help)

from 1991 to 2013. This partially reverted a recent edit of mine. I don't doubt that Doc James is acting in good faith, but I think the change of date is incorrect and that the correct date is 1991. My reasons are:

  • I changed the publisher from Elsevier to Academic Press to match the information on the title page image provided by Google Books.
  • I changed the year of publication to 1991 to match the information on the publication data page image provided by Gooogle Books.
  • I recognise that the Google Books information provided by clicking on "About this Book" shows the publisher as Elsevier, a publication date of 22 October 2013, and lists the book as a "revised edition". It also shows only a single editor, Wayland J. Hayes, Jr., with Edward R. Laws, Jr. listed as a "contributor." This page also shows ISBNs of ISBN 1483288633 and ISBN 9781483288635. The publication data page viewable on Google Books provides ISBNs of ISBN 0123341612 for v. 1, ISBN 0123341620 for v. 2, and ISBN 0123341639 for v. 3.
  • This is not the first time I have found discrepancies between the about the book information and the images of the actual title and publication page images.
  • Searching Google Books on the last of these ISBNs, 0123341639, returns that it does not match any books but links to the correct volume with the correct ISBN 0123341639 and also ISBN 9780123341631 – and a publication year of 1991 and publisher of Academic Press... but does not allow e-access.
  • The volume 3 book viewable online starts on page 1125, the first page of Chapter 17, and with an index starting on page 1527. This is also inconsistent with the "about this book" information which lists that the book is 949 pages in length.
  • I have doubts about the 2013 date as volume 1 (from 1991 and listed as 1576 pages) was digitised by Google Books on 1 March 2010.
  • A search on the Open Library shows that the 2nd edition was a two volume set with Robert Krieger as editor (ISBN 9780124262607), published in 2001.
  • Further, Elsevier published the book's 3rd edition in 2010, now titled as Hayes' Handbook of Pesticide Toxicology and with Robert Krieger as the editor-in-chief.
  • I suspect that the 2013 publication data on the first edition (from 1991) could be some e-book version or a revised edition, but I can't figure out why one would be published in 2013 based on the first edition rather than on the third edition. In any event, the actual images to which we are linking are from the book originally published in 1991, and I believe it is this information that should be recorded.

Doc James, would you object if I changed the reference to read:

Knowles, Charles O. (1991). "22.4.2 Benzyl Benzoate". In Hayes, Wayland J.; Laws, Edward R. (eds.). Handbook of Pesticide Toxicology, Volume 3: Classes of Pesticides. Academic Press. pp. 1505–1508. ISBN 0123341639.?

I could use the ISBN 9780123341631 instead if you like, as this is the 13 digit version that matches the 10-digit ISBN 0123341639. Alternatively, I ask others to contribute to a consensus on the reference information to provide. Thanks. EdChem (talk) 04:22, 25 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

User:EdChem we have amazon here.
https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=Handbook+of+Pesticide+Toxicology
It lists it as the 3rd revised edition. The third edition was published in 2010.

But yah it says 1991 inside the book so best to go with that.

Thanks, Doc James. I would happily use the 3rd edition if I could find the relevant content at Google Books, but it seems to be unavailable. So, I'll use the 1991 version. EdChem (talk) 12:46, 26 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
