"Jewish" is not a nationality, it's a religion. Besides, is that important? Growing up with Scottish parentage would generally make one think Presbyterian. (talk→ BWilkins ←track) 14:09, 6 June 2009 (UTC)
BWilkins you are my hero for knowing that Jewish is a religion not a race, too many people make that mistake --Gold Man60 Talk 00:56, 7 June 2009 (UTC)

Note 23 incorrect

It incorrectly attributes Gates to saying that, but read the reference, it's the reporter that said that and Gates just agreed. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Bgates456 (talkcontribs) 04:56, 16 June 2009 (UTC)

You're right, so I removed the sentence. Without Gates making that claim, there's no real motivation for mentioning that he took the course. WillOakland (talk) 06:51, 16 June 2009 (UTC)

This article needs to be fixed seriously

First the article basically worships him. It says his IQ is 170(without proof of any sort), it uses biased language(esp. of his tactics), and it sounds like he wrote himself. YVNP (talk) 08:39, 11 July 2009 (UTC)

The 170 IQ figure is quite specifically justified from sources. Many users have come along before you vaguely claiming that the article is "too favorable," and they have rarely given specifics. Do you have any? Keep in mind that this article is about Gates as a person, not about Microsoft as a company. WillOakland (talk) 08:15, 15 July 2009 (UTC)

Education

The article mentions that he entered Harvard but doesn't say that he left before finishing a degree. I think it's important to include that point. Excluding it leaves the impression that he graduated from Harvard. He has done great things in his life, but that's not one of them. I suggest that the last sentence in the Early Life section be changed to something like: "His parents supported his decision to leave Harvard before completing a degree after seeing how much Gates wanted to start a company" —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.25.173.50 (talk) 02:17, 25 July 2009 (UTC)

Ferdinand Lundberg said in "The Rich and the Super-Rich" (1968) "Nobody, first of all, would be rich if he had not been favored by circumstances. Favoring general circumstances in the United States have been: a naturally rich virgin continent, an enlarging widely skilled population, a basic law designed to facilitate private property under earlier purely agrarian-mercantile circumstances, an expanding technology that took multiplied advantages of agrarian-mercantile law and a plethora of purchasable officials!..." INCORRECT ENTRY IN WIKI OF BILL GATES

is INCORRECTLY written that Microsoft sold PC-DOS for $50,000 to IBM. Microsoft purchased PC-DOS for 50,000. This is a very important fact that has been wrongly written in the wiki of Bill Gates.

References: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MS-DOS here the price given is $75,000, in either case Microsoft did not accept a one time payment of $50,000 from IBM.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft no price is mentioned, but states that Microsoft purchased DOS and later sold it to IBM, that purchase price which Microsoft paid is either 50,000 or 75,000, it is not what Microsoft was paid by IBM, rather is what Microsoft paid to purchase DOS.

Indeed, when I replaced it I found conflicts with more reliable sources. Keep in mind that those edits with it were from YEARS ago when standards were vastly different on wikipedia. Criticism

Gates's philanthropy should certainly not be a subsection of "Criticism". Could someone please fix this? City.Of.Beltaine (talk) 06:13, 2 August 2010 (UTC)

Actually, the heading "philanthropy" as a subsection of "Criticism" deals with the criticism of his philanthropy (it's sad that people criticize someone giving their earnings away, but it happens…). Airplaneman 22:21, 2 August 2010 (UTC)

I think I may have worded this wrong... There are two identical "Criticisms" sections, one of which has the subsection "Philanthropy". This is obviously not needed, so I think the first "Criticism" section ought to be deleted, and "Philanthropy" made into its own section.—Preceding unsigned comment added by City.Of.Beltaine (talkcontribs)

The citation for his religion being agnostic doesn't specify his religion anywhere. He calls religion an "inefficient use of time" and talks about choosing a religion for his kids, but never says he is agnostic. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 202.89.189.114 (talk) 02:18, 8 August 2010 (UTC)

Indeed, it doesn't back it up. It does say "Even though I not religious" on a different page [3], but that is kind of general; I've put it back in though with a recent source, but even this one says "recent statements indicates he's an agnostic"[4], so it's still shaky. Opposed, for the moment. Gates is listed as helping to found the organization, so its statements might be acceptable as to him, but it's not obvious that there is a reliable source. — Arthur Rubin (talk) 11:30, 8 August 2010 (UTC)
I see you got here before I suggested you go her on my talk page. I'll re-iterate for others what I said earlier. The reference I'm citing is the official website for The Giving Pledge. On their website is a 55-page PDF consisting of a series of letters from those who made the pledge that they've done so. There are a lot of bad refs in wikipedia if Arthur Rubin thinks this is a case of an unreliable source. If Arthur Rubin really thinks I'm breaking a rule here, perhaps we can fall back on WP:IAR... Done I have added a sentence about The Giving Pledge to the philanthropy section. - Talk to you later, Presidentman (talk) Random Picture of the Day 11:54, 8 August 2010 (UTC)
(ec) WP:BLP is, I'm afraid, not subject to WP:IAR. I've wanted to add true material about other people, but could not, because we did not have a reliable source. The Giving Pledge does not qualify as a reliable source under any of our criteria. Any of the articles used as a reference in our article on The Giving Pledge seems to be, and most of them could be used to support the edit here, as long as http://givingpledge.org is not used as a reference. For Gates and Buffet only, it is clearly notable, as they seem to have founded the organization. For any of the others, notability would also have to be established. (I haven't seen a source for "his wife" other than http://givingpledge.org, so that may not be usable.) The following phrasing may be acceptable, although we'd need to find the appropriate parameters for the citation.
  • Gates has made The Giving Pledge to donate over half of his wealth to charity.<ref>{{cite news| url= http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/38556042/ns/us_news-giving/ | title= 40 billionaires pledge to give away half of wealth| work=???|accessdate=2010-08-08}}</ref>
Arthur Rubin (talk) 11:56, 8 August 2010 (UTC)
I mentioned WP:IAR in I guess a failed attempt to make you more comfortable with the fact that my changes are not violating BLP policy. I still can't believe you aren't swayed by the fact that The Giving Pledge is a legitimate LLC with a PDF (http://givingpledge.org/Content/media/AugustPledgeLetters.pdf) of letters from those who have made the pledge. Please stop reverting my work. Thanks. 67.101.5.165 (talk) 12:07, 8 August 2010 (UTC)
It being a "legitimate LLC" has nothing to do with reliability. — Arthur Rubin (talk) 12:25, 8 August 2010 (UTC)

(popping out from the indentation)

I look forward to someone else supporting your assessment that the official website for The Giving Pledge is not a reliable source. For future use I'll switch to http://givingpledge.org/Content/media/AugustPledgeLetters.pdf which is the PDF for the letters themselves, but clearly that compromise is not acceptable to you. So for now, I am reverting my work to its original state, and will use the PDF for future edits unless I see your opinion about reliability supported by the community. Thanks. 67.101.5.165 (talk) 12:40, 8 August 2010 (UTC)

It's still a clear BLP violation on your part, for most of the pledgers. What would be marginally acceptable is if you would tag all the references with {{vc}}. It would still be a BLP violation, but letting it stay for a few hours, under those circumstances, is probably acceptable. — Arthur Rubin (talk) 12:46, 8 August 2010 (UTC)
Clear to you I guess. Looking forward to evidence from other editors that my good-faith edits warrant the repeated reversion you are willing to apply to them. 67.101.5.165 (talk) 13:06, 8 August 2010 (UTC)

No, there are three classes in the USA: working class (lower class), middle class and upper class. Bill Gates comes from a middle class family. Now he is upper class. Upper class are extremely rich people (billionaires) or old families with vitamine c (connections). —Preceding unsigned comment added by 202.22.237.224 (talk) 08:30, 19 January 2011 (UTC)

Gates was definitely raised upper middle class---he attended an exclusive private college prep school and was the son of a regionally prominent attorney whose law firm is now one of the largest in the world (K&L Gates). Most middle class people can't afford to send their kids to college prep schools (unless their kids can get scholarships) and don't start international law firms or serve on the boards of major nonprofits. --Coolcaesar (talk) 11:24, 19 January 2011 (UTC)

KBE

I know this has been discussed numerous times, but I would like to provide my feedback.

According to the FAQ "No. According to the Manual of Style, post-nominals should be omitted unless the article subject is closely associated with the issuing country. Gates's honorary knighthood is mentioned along with honors from several other countries in the "Recognition" section."

When I refer to the Manual of Style, the is what is written "... Therefore, as with regular titles, the honorific title should be included in the initial reference and infobox heading for the person, but is strictly optional upon subsequent references ..."

I referenced other similar non-uk business recipients - Akio Morita and Henri Deterding and their honorary knighthood are included in the initial reference of their article. Shouldn't we be consistent and standardize the KBE naming convention? ♠♠ BanëJ ♠ ♠ 17:12, 30 January 2011 (UTC)

As you note, this comes up every six months or so - hence a FAQ. The section of the MOS you're looking for is the section on post nominals. "included when they are issued by a country or widely recognizable organization with which the subject has been closely associated. Honors issued by other entities may be mentioned in the article, but generally should be omitted from the lead." If you feel that Mr. Gates is "closely associated" with the UK, more so than any other country his business or charities impact, then let's discuss. I am not familiar with the other articles you mention; may be a good idea to start a discussion there. Kuru (talk) 17:40, 30 January 2011 (UTC)

Speeding tickets are common, thousands of people get one in their life. I think the only reason it is here, is to show disrespect to Mr. Gates. The rest of the article has sparse info about Gates, and carries a condescending tone. The internet is full of attack articles on Gates, why is Wicky allowing yellow journalism. Our government is full of people with worse law violations. It is a shame for such brief info on Gates, prominently displays his 1 mug shot, for a minor violation. It shows anger, envy, or a nrgative agenda by the editors. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.148.117.207 (talk) 17:19, 28 November 2010 (UTC)

There is no condescension apparent to me in the section mentioning the mugshot; it notes that he holds a modified version of the photo in a commercial he appears in.  Frank  |  talk  17:26, 28 November 2010 (UTC)

Knighthood

Should the first mention of his name include his title? I'm aware that it is only an honourary knighthood but he is still entitled to use the letters after his name. For example the Ben Kingsley article includes his CBE in the first reference to his name. I'd make the change but I'm not sure what the appropriate wiki policy is on this type of thing. Indian Institute of Technology Golden Jubile celebration speech in San Jose

The IIT bit is completely out of place. The entire sentence is dedicated to honorary degrees but someone decided to add that Bill Gates delivered a speech to IIT alumni/alumnae in San Jose. What has this got to do with honorary degrees? Bill Gates never got a degree from IIT. Disputed or Inaccurate Facts about Steve Ballmer in the Currier House photo caption

Photography of The Poker Room in Currier House at Harvard University

181.132.124.174 (talk) 14:15, 18 April 2012 (UTC)The text under the photo must be corrected, Instead of Steve Ballmer the co-founder is Paul Allen, if I'm not wrong. Nevertheless in the summary of the image the description is right, with Paul Allen as founder. You are not wrong, i will hope too somebody is able to correct this.89.144.206.240 (talk) 18:01, 1 May 2012 (UTC)

Caption of Currier House picture seems off

The caption for the Currier House picture seems inconsistent with the articles for Currier House, Steve Ballmer, and Microsoft. It states that in that room, Gates and Ballmer "formed Microsoft," but in the Microsoft article, it's noted that Gates and Paul Allen formed Microsoft in 1975, 5 years before Ballmer was invited to join the company. Also, Ballmer's article notes that he was hired for "a salary of $50,000 as well as a percentage of ownership of the company," which strongly implies that the company already existed (and, in fact had about 30 employees at the time), thereby preventing Ballmer from "forming" it.

If my understanding of the above is correct, then the caption should be altered to reflect that Gates and Ballmer were somehow furthering the company (which seems entirely likely, given the facts), rather than "forming" it. Edit: I didn't realize that I wasn't signed-in when I wrote the above. Dmutters (talk) 00:10, 15 June 2012 (UTC)

Atari Fired Bill Gates!

--ZaferXYZ (talk) 15:35, 28 June 2012 (UTC)
Gates wasn't Atari's employee to "fire" at that time. He was an employee of Microsoft. Atari licensed BASIC from Microsoft and then terminated the license when it could not be adapted to their needs. So no, it isn't true. 24.22.217.162 (talk) 00:36, 22 July 2012 (UTC)

Phrase "the second-most generous philanthropists in America" has bias or POV problems

The sentence that says refers to Mr. and Mrs. Gates as "the second-most generous philanthropists in America" should instead state simply the fact that they gave the second largest amount of money, or whatever the writer meant by "the second-most generous philanthropists in America".

The phrase "second-most generous" implies that those who gave less are necessarily less generous, which may not be correct. For example, those who have given everything they owned, and have no more to give, should not be considered less generous, merely because they did not have as much as Mr. and Mrs. Gates have given. "Generosity" is a personality trait, and cannot be measured quantitatively. Even to the extent that it can be quantified, it should be measured as a percentage. For example, a person who has $10,000, and gives $9900, has given 99%, which exceeds the percentage of net worth given by Mr. and Mrs. Gates.

They are generous, but not the second-most generous in the country, just the most able to act on their generosity.

As there are different ways to attempt to quantify generosity (percentage of income, percentage of net worth, total dollar amount, value of giving one's life, organ donors, etc.), which are further complicated by the question of whether an anonymous donation is more generous than one for which the donor receives public recognition, we should stick to the facts, without attempting any sort of ranking of relative generosity. 71.109.150.13 (talk) 03:03, 8 July 2012 (UTC)

Computer programmer is kinda ridiculous in the intro

I doubt he has programmed anything in the last 15 to 20 years and it's not exactly prestigious as opposed to being a business magnate/philanthropist

[previous sentence not signed]

It's also kind of redundant/obvious. Like the time when the Vatican announced which priests were being promoted to Cardinals and gave out copies of their bios (later discovered to have been copied verbatim from Wikipedia), many of which mentioned that they were Catholic.71.109.150.13 (talk) 02:47, 8 July 2012 (UTC)

Software company founders are not necessarily themselves programmers, e.g. Larry Ellison, Scott McNealy. Being a computer programmer might not be "as prestigious" as this or that but it is a fact of his career. 24.22.217.162 (talk) 21:16, 29 July 2012 (UTC)

Why Microsoft Moved from Albuquerque to Bellevue

One source says Microsoft moved from Albuquerque to its new home in Bellevue, Washington on January 1, 1979, because "it was often difficult to convince programmers to move to Albuquerque, which was far from major universities and big cities." The source also says that "although most computer companies were located in California, Gate's ties to his family were strong" and that Gates "opted to move Microsoft to Bellevue, Washington, near Seattle"[1]. Another source says this: "While examples abound, the first president of the Santa Fe Institute, George Cowan, notes that Albuquerque bankers rejected a ten thousand dollar loan application from a young Bill Gates during the early years of the company that eventually became Microsoft. Gates received an alternative loan from his father contingent on him returning to Seattle."[2] More sources need to be researched to determine the cause of the move from Albuquerque. Brenton J. Microsoft - the world’s largest personal-computer software company?

I don't see any source confirming this, and i highly doubt it after the failure they had with Windows 8, causing the pc market to drop a lot the first quarter of 2013. Apple has also caught up a lot, it they categorize as a personal-computer software company. I think we should either link to some page that shows that Microsoft really are what this page claims, or the reference should be deleted. (User:petterroea) 10:47, 23 April 2013 (UTC)

Antihero

To me this article is severely lacking in references to criticism. Gates, for decades, has been held to be almost akin to an antichrist both amongst the free software movement and the Apple cult. If I get time (unlikely-- feel free to jump in) I might try to do justice to these perspectives. --120.144.160.86 (talk) 08:51, 22 March 2013 (UTC)

Please refer to the FAQ at the top of this page regarding what criticisms are relevant in this article. Gates cannot be assumed to be personally behind every step that Microsoft has taken as a business that someone might have criticized. You cannot use blog posts and web forums (or "common knowledge") as sources for the subject you describe. You would have to use reliable sources like Rivlin's The Plot to Get Bill Gates. 2001:558:6045:1D:56E:DCCB:ED9D:24EA (talk) 22:31, 19 May 2013 (UTC)

Whats about Gary Kildall ( CP/M ) allegations ? He say until he died, that Gates steal the idea and sourcecode. He said: "Ask Bill [Gates] why the string in function 9 ends with a dollar sign. He can not answer. I just know it. " (Similiar story in facebook - History repeated) Very interesting in contrast to the TRIPS -agreement and to his "Early life" (sneak computer time) Suitable to the allegations that micrososft make some products incomplete to push subsidiary company.

OK whatever, fact is that Gary Kildall said, that Gates steal his product. That would surely purely. Gary Kildall is not a nobody.

The journalist Greg Palast assumed Gates, to act unfairly with his foundation. Gates supports u. a the TRIPS-agreement.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TRIPS_Agreement

Kildall did not create the "idea" of an operating system, only his particular realization in CP/M which, by his own admission, borrowed here and there from DEC's minicomputer systems. He never claimed (much less demonstrated) that Gates stole code in any source that I'm aware of. Refer to the articles here about Kildall and 86-DOS, and to their sources. As for Palast, in spite all of his sound and fury, he does not come close to showing that Gates had any personal involvement in the development of TRIPS or has ever said one word about it. Therefore the subject is not relevant in this article about Gates as an individual. 2001:558:6045:1D:56E:DCCB:ED9D:24EA (talk) 22:21, 19 May 2013 (UTC)

117.221.45.82 (talk) 12:02, 14 September 2013 (UTC)DROP LINE WORDS ALMA MATTER SINCE HE NEVER FORMALLY GRADUATED FROM ANY UNIVERSITY.DROP OUTS CAN'T CLAIM WORDS ALMA MATTER SINCE THEY DID NOT RECEIVED FORMAL DEGREE FROM THAT UNIVERSITY. Ho.Degree holders too can't write/use the words Alma Matter.

Sure they can; alma matter simply indicates the university one studied at, it confers no indication of that being the ultimate university one's degree was earned from. Kuru (talk) 12:55, 14 September 2013 (UTC)
Agree with Kuru. Dictionary.com, used as a reference for Alma mater, says "a school, college, or university at which one has studied and, usually, from which one has graduated", but it doesn't have to be from which one has graduated. In this article, there is no ambiguity, since the infobox clearly states that he dropped out. – Wdchk (talk) 13:15, 14 September 2013 (UTC)

Further, if one is invited to provide the name of somebody's alma mater, it is redundant to provide any further information about the progress of the course. If there were a field in the infobox for 'Degrees obtained' or 'Academic qualifications', one could conclude from the infobox that he did not graduate: in the absence of such, there is no call for any mention of academic results in the infobox. Kevin McE (talk) 17:30, 9 November 2013 (UTC)

Is Harvard University Bill Gates' Alma mater?

The info box states that Harvard University is Bill Gates' Alma mater. Everybody knows that Gates dropped out of Harvard after 2 years. Previously, the info box included "dropped out," but this designation was removed, and people who now read the article are led to believe that Gates graduated from Harvard.

I don't understand why "dropped out" was removed from the info box if the designation is correct. As far as I know, you have to graduate from a school or university in order to call it your "Alma mater."

Technically, Harvard is NOT Bill Gates' Alma mater. The information in the info box is false.

  • In the 2013 film Elysium, an attack on the character John Henry Carlyle is monitored from Earth orbit; real time video is accompanied by an infographic that should be famliar to anyone who has read the Bill Gates article:

John Henry Carlyle (born October 13, 2010) is an Elysian business magnate, computer programmer and philanthropist. Carlyle is the former chief executive and current chairman of Armadyne, the world's largest computer software and armaments [?] company. He is consistently ranked among the world's wealthiest people and was the wealthiest toverall from 2045 to 2059, excluding 2058, when he was ranked third. During his career at Armadyne, Carlyle held the positions of CEO and chief software architect, and remains the largest indvidual shareholder with 6.4 percent of the common stock. He has also authored or co-authored several books. Carlyle is one of the best-known entrepreneurs of the personal droid revolution. Carlyle has been criticized for his business tactics, which have been considered anti-competitive, an opinion which has in some cases been upheld by the courts. In the latter stages of his career, Carlyle has pursued a number of philanthropic endeavors, donating large amounts of money to various organizations and scientific research programs through the Carlyle foundation, established in 2109.

Hi. In the "Investments" section, perhaps you should remove the "new" from the comment: "bgC3, a new think-tank company founded by Bill Gates." I mention this since the corresponding article on bgC3 states that it is "a company founded by Microsoft's co-founder, Bill Gates in 2008," which would not make it a "new" company, but rather a now six year-old company. These are the issues that have multiple paragraphs. No need to pick a few of the dozens of things mentioned. I have changed it to "In a substantial interview with Rolling Stone magazine, published in the March 27, 2014 issue, Gates provided his perspective on a range of issues, such as climate change, his charitable activities, various tech companies and people involved in them, and the state of America." Is Bill Gates religious - a Catholic?

By just googling "Bill Gates religion" I first found this. Also read it for contradicting history.

WP:CAT/R and maybe more such as WP:CATDEF could apply. It seems Gates has not been a huge believer and "partipates in" could mean "singing in the choir"? Imagine that :) Maybe a choir boy is an inherant religious role?

It seems to me even if your wife is a Catholic and you want to support her and not contradict her religious upbringing of the children you are not automatically a Catholic? Did he say anything special when they got married?

Earlier exchanges: Frost: Do you believe in the Sermon on the Mount?

Gates: I don’t. I’m not somebody who goes to church on a regular basis. The specific elements of Christianity are not something I’m a huge believer in. There’s a lot of merit in the moral aspects of religion. I think it can have a very, very positive impact.

Frost: I sometimes say to people, do you believe there is a god, or do you know there is a god? And, you’d say you don’t know?

Gates: In terms of doing things I take a fairly scientific approach to why things happen and how they happen. I don’t know if there’s a god or not, but I think religious principles are quite valid.

On January 13, 1996, in a “Time” magazine profile of Gates by Walter Isaacson, there was this exchange:

Isaacson: Isn’t there something special, perhaps even divine, about the human soul?

Gates: I don’t have any evidence on that.

If he is claimed as religious then a source should be given and the one that currently does it makes a big deal unlike the original:

Thank God they actually do fund basic research ["God" in the middle of article - a figure of speech? ..]

You're a technologist, but a lot of your work now with the foundation has a moral dimension. Has your thinking about the value of religion changed over the years?

The moral systems of religion, I think, are superimportant. We've raised our kids in a religious way; they've gone to the Catholic church that Melinda goes to and I participate in. I've been very lucky, and therefore I owe it to try and reduce the inequity in the world. And that's kind of a religious belief. I mean, it's at least a moral belief.

Do you believe in God?

I agree with people like Richard Dawkins that mankind felt the need for creation myths. Before we really began to understand disease and the weather and things like that, we sought false explanations for them. Now science has filled in some of the realm – not all – that religion used to fill. But the mystery and the beauty of the world is overwhelmingly amazing, and there's no scientific explanation of how it came about. To say that it was generated by random numbers, that does seem, you know, sort of an uncharitable view [laughs]. I think it makes sense to believe in God, but exactly what decision in your life you make differently because of it, I don't know. comp.arch (talk) 10:37, 16 October 2014 (UTC)

Maybe he is an agnostic Catholic if we have to say anything in the Infobox.. Seems to me the article itself best describes his views. comp.arch (talk) 17:11, 16 October 2014 (UTC)
I wouldn't use WordPress for such a definition. In any case, I feel that we shouldn't say Gates is Catholic unless he explicitly says he identifies as such. Simply going to a Catholic Church does not automatically make him such- there are many instances where a couple has different religious affiliations from one another while attending the religious services for one. This is what I believe All Hallow's Wraith is arguing. Snuggums (talk / edits) 20:57, 16 October 2014 (UTC)
Yes, that's what I'm saying. Bill Gates wasn't born a Catholic, and there's no evidence that he has converted to Catholicism. For example, Tony Blair was not born a Catholic either, but went to Catholic church with his Catholic wife and children. After leaving office, he officially converted to Catholicism. Is there any evidence that Gates has as well? All Hallow's Wraith (talk) 22:33, 16 October 2014 (UTC)
Yes, I should have added a :) as I wasn't maybe completely serious about "agnostic Catholic" (was just googling for both.. and thought when seeing it, when are you a "confirmed religionist" :) ). All I know or is my understanding is that an athiest renounces religion strongly, agnostics needs evidence and doesn't "believe" in God, the stand Gates seems to have had (and currently?) and was at one point in the Infobox at least. He may never have used either word; I tried looking up and wouldn't find. Still agnostic would have been ok based on what he had told in the past, right? Then there is the possibility that you get religious. Seems to me in the Rolling Stones interview he is being evasive and that is a word other have used for it. Should this one newest (I assume) source be taken as the current situation and older excluded or is it ok to look towards others?
See also [8][9] and also noting he may not "control" the Foundation (only, his wife, both more?) [10]. comp.arch (talk) 10:18, 17 October 2014 (UTC)

"inventor"

I request to remove the identification as an inventor and the associated category.

This is cited to a broken link to a blog post, not a reliable source even if I could read it. Gates is listed (under his legal name) as coinventor on various patents but these generally are dated long after he moved out of software development into management, so they would seem to be a corporate formality. In any case, Gates is not known as an inventor the way that Edison or Dean Kamen are, so to place that claim so prominently is unjustified. 66.87.119.62 (talk) 21:41, 14 June 2015 (UTC)

From a quick search, he does appear to be listed as inventor or co-inventor or 50+ patents - not all of which are connected to Microsoft.[11]
If he's listed as an inventor on an official patent filing, any claims that he's not really an inventor due to "corporate formality" would be original research. --- Barek (talkcontribs) - 21:51, 14 June 2015 (UTC)
(response from requester) WP:MOSBIO states "The notable position(s) or role(s) the person held should usually be stated in the opening paragraph. However, avoid overloading the lead sentence with various sundry roles; instead, emphasize what made the person notable." This places a sourcing burden, beyond mere technical accuracy, on whoever wants to include a particular label in the lead. That Bill Gates moved out of software development to management is not original research, but is noted in the body of the article ("Management style") sourced to a direct statement from himself. Elsewhere he has stated, "At Microsoft there are lots of brilliant ideas but the image is that they all come from the top - I'm afraid that's not quite right." So the idea that he doesn't personally invent what comes out of Microsoft is not something I'm making up; there's a paper trail. 50.185.134.48 (talk) 22:47, 14 June 2015 (UTC)
Even if you ignore these patent listings, a quick Google search turns up multiple articles listing him as an inventor or co-inventor of multiple products, including co-invention of MS-DOS.
You are taking multiple independent pieces of information, and synthesizing the conclusion that he was not really the inventor despite being listed as the inventor on 50+ patents (not all of which are within Microsoft). Synthesizing a conclusion from multiple pieces of information is pretty much the definition of original research. What we have are verifiable statements of him being an inventor, vs your original research drawing a conclusion that these verifiable statements are not valid. --- Barek (talkcontribs) - 01:18, 15 June 2015 (UTC)
(response) Please do link this source that identifies Gates as a co-inventor of MS-DOS, which was originally coded by Tim Paterson without any involvement from Gates, in rough imitation of Gary Kildall's design for CP/M. That you would accept such an assertion at face value raises significant doubts as to whether you are in any position to evaluate source reliability on this subject. 167.107.191.217 (talk) 20:27, 15 June 2015 (UTC)
I am well aware of the history of MS-DOS/86-DOS. However, Wikipedia works based on third-party reliable sources - and there are more than enough sources between the patents and news articles to leave the "inventor" tag. If you still disagree, feel free to start an RFC to gather community consensus for your desired change. --- Barek (talkcontribs) - 20:43, 15 June 2015 (UTC)

Billy Gates returns from a hunt

Humans live in tribes, collections of families who assign duties and enforce demarcations
This nexus is matriarchal, the females (the dominant females) control access
He has an older and a younger sister, I assume from the same mother and father
For three children families how frequent is FMF as opposed to all the other combinations from FFF to MMM (2^3=8 combos) FFF,FFM,FMF,MFF,FMM,MFM,MMF,MMM
I would bet out of a large sample FMF is less often than 12.5%
I am going to predict 2 to 3 %
And yes he had FMF for his offspring!
Can you spot my reasoning ?

Add information to the personal donations section. This is about a $20 million donation to Carnegie Mellon University to build a computer science building.

In 2004, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation donated $20 million to Carnegie Mellon University to fund a new School of Computer Science building. The new building, the Gates Center for Computer Science, has become a center for breakthroughs and innovation for the world and is a big contributor to the atmosphere to the campus. (https://www.cmu.edu/cmnews/extra/040914_gates.html) Later, the Gates Center was awarded LEED Gold status in 2011 by the USGBC. Lead

There are two things I have against this paragraph in the lead. Firstly, the criticism part seems to imply that there are major controversies over Bill Gates' business tactics, which I find inappropriate for the lead since to the best of my knowledge those controversies are not so major and they are controversies surrounding Microsoft and not necessarily Bill Gates himself. Secondly, I find the flow of the paragraph extremely awkward. It starts off as saying, "Bill Gates soundly revolutionized the PC," and then dwells on the negative with, "Gates may be engaging in monopolistic or anti-competitive behavior." None of this flows well, never mind the positioning of the paragraph.

If I were to change the paragraph, I would take the first sentence and merge it with the first paragraph to form something like, "He is best known as the principal founder of Microsoft Corporation, and is one of the best-known entrepreneurs of the personal computer revolution," and then delete what is left and save it for the Microsoft section. In media: low quality and dreadfully irrelevant

Hello all. I am very tempted to remove the "in media" section in its entirety. It is wholly unencyclopedic, its content is decidely irrelevant, and appears to be the cumulated work of ignorant editors too lazy to bother with anything besides bullet point-tidbits. I have already removed a single-sentence subsection entitled "Social media" that devoted a much-desired sentence to the fact that as of 2013, Bill Gates is a LinkedIn Influencer. The capitalized "I" signified its importance.

All kidding aside, I suggest someone either improves this section (preferably those responsible for its existence), or we remove it entirely. Nothing of value will be lost and our understanding of Bill Gates as a person will remain ever the same. (Shocking!) Though tempted as I may be, I predict my removal of this hallmark of literary excellence may encounter some resistance. Hence my infantile attempt at gauging temperatures. Looking forward to any type of feedback.

Take care. Jay D. Easy (talk) 22:50, 3 May 2019 (UTC)

Bill Gates’ Honorary Knighthood

Queen Elizabeth II awarded Bill Gates with Honorary Knighthood. This is an honor given to those not British Subjects. As the holder of an honorary knighthood Bill Gates can’t use Sir before his name but he is allowed the post-nominals KBE. I have added this to his name and it has been reverted even though he is allowed their use by the British Sovereign who awarded it to him. I notice that his wife Melinda Gates who has been awarded the honorary female equivalent of knighthood has the post-nominals DBE on her WP page. I also noticed some ridiculous included statement in the code of Bill Gates that says WP doesn’t include post-nominals to those who don’t have close association with the British Monarchy. What is up with that? Queen Elizabeth honored Bill Gates with an honorary knighthood which entitles him to use the post nominals KBE(but not Sir). I think that his post-nominals should be included after his name in the lead. ~~ NapoleonX (talk) 01:07, 4 May 2019 (UTC)

1. User talk:AHampton#Your help desk question
2. Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style/Biography/2019 archive#post-nominal letters re: "closely associated"
3. continues on, (as hatted and titled by SMcCandlish), "Two-editor circular stuff that is mostly a personality conflict ..."

I absolutely squirm whenever I stumble into someone's religion on Wikipedia. (It's none of my business and I don't want to know.) Honestly, that's a problem with you and not with the article. This is important information. 188.124.94.249 (talk) 16:07, 25 June 2019 (UTC)

Poor sources

Wikipedia content should be a summary of what reliable third-party sources have reported on the subject. Sources for this article often fall short of this standard. We have Gates' own blog, Microsoft, interviews and even Facebook. I don't think that's appropriate for a Good Article on a living person. We should either go through the sources and replace the poor ones by better ones (which I expect will largely exist), or we should re-think whether the page in its current state is still a Good Article. I believe the neutrality tag on its own would quick-fail a GA nomination, but I'm not really an expert on GA criteria. Huon (talk) 21:10, 31 August 2019 (UTC)

I would like to add this sentence based on recent news. In 2019, The New Yorker reported that Gates donated 2 million dollars to MIT Media Lab using Jeffrey Epstein as an intermediary. [5] ChromeArm (talk) 15:28, 7 September 2019 (UTC)

Not done: please establish a consensus for this alteration before using the {{edit semi-protected}} template. Melmann 16:22, 7 September 2019 (UTC)
Note: Given Jeffrey Epstein's status as alleged child sex trafficker, I think tying him to Bill Gates should be done with utmost care and not without clear consensus in support. Melmann 16:26, 7 September 2019 (UTC)

Not done: it's not clear what changes you want to be made. Please mention the specific changes in a "change X to Y" format and provide a reliable source if appropriate. Favonian (talk) 16:12, 16 September 2019 (UTC)

The third sentence under Personal Life: "According to 2007 King County public records, the total assessed value of the property—land and house—is US$125 million, and the annual property taxes are US$991,000." should be updated with numbers from 2009 reported on https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Gates%27s_house "In 2009, property taxes were reported to be US $1.063 million on a total assessed value of US $147.5 million."
