  • Too much of 1970-1 in the intro. No need for that sort of details
  • Rewrite one of the two "He spent two years there" in one paragraph
  • He played in all of Victoria's matches in 1956-57 - all but one
  • He performed modestly over the following seasons, until scoring 266 after being dropped on 12 against New South Wales in Sydney in 1960-61 shortly before the selectors chose the team for the 1961 Ashes tour.[2] - Break up
  • Lawry was sent to England as a promising young reserve opener. - Why reserve ? He wasn't the first choice ?
  • Subsequently, Australian selectors installed him as Bob Simpson's Test opening partner, ousting Colin McDonald. - (a) Lawry opened with Macdonald in the first three Tests, it was Simpson who came in, not Lawry. (b) McDonald was not "outsted by selectors" According to Wisden 1962, McD was injured. (c) The line should come well inside the paragraph because the partnership with Simpson happened only in the fourth Test
  • With the series at 2-1 leading into the Fifth Test in Sydney, Lawry struck 151 in the first innings to set up a 3-1 series win. - In the last Test, Lawry refused to enforce the follow on, batted on and left WI 735 to win. "Running like a girl" comment[edit]

I must be showing my age; I thought it was pretty famous, but it seems things get forgotten after a certain period of time. I can't give you the exact details, but I think it would have been in the early 80s. He was commentating about an Australian fielder who was running for the ball, and he said something like "Look at him, can't he do better than that? He's running like a girl". Lots of groups got up in arms about it. He tried to defend himself by saying it was not intended as a slight against girls, but he had to eventually concede that, whatever his intention, it was offensive to a lot of people. I'm actually very surprised it isn't mentioned in the books about him. Has anyone ever written a full biography of Bill Lawrie? I don't have a full book on Lawry. I mostly used it from general history books of his playing era. The chapter summaries in the compilation books of Australian captains usually only have 1/2-3/4 of a page out of about ten devoted to his commentary career, and those are the usual obvious info about his cliched catchcrys and excitable nature. I guess he gets excited by "his favourite opener" Sehwag because Sehwag's Strike rate in Tests in about 78, which is probably 2.5-3 times higher than they were in Lawry's era. Orphaned references in Bill Lawry[edit]

I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of Bill Lawry's orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.
