Meeting Stone[edit]

I had the great honour of meeting William on the 23rd June 2006 as my capacity as the Mayor of High Wycombe. I invited him to the Mayors Parlour after hearing about his exploits from a fellow war veteran & decided that I must meet him! William will be 106 on the 23rd September 2006!!

I could not believe just how fit and also mentally active he was, yet alone believe that he would be a day over 60!

He very kindly gave me a list of his medals and details of the ships that he sailed with from 1918 to 1945.

Death?[edit]

The source page for his date of death - http://www.hmshood.com/crew/biography/wfstone_bio.htm - has him dying in 2008 (which is obviously not correct as he was out and about on remembrance day 2008) and I can't find any other reference to his death on 10 Jan 2009 or otherwise, so I don't think this is reliable.

I've removed the recent death template pending a decent news source of his deathKernel Saunters (talk) 15:18, 12 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Seeing as the page was updated on 11 January 2009, it's pretty safe to say that '2008' was just a typo. SiameseTurtle (talk) 18:22, 12 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Better safe than sorry, happy we have good sources now Kernel Saunters (talk) 23:18, 12 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

War Medals[edit]

I understand that the list of medals has been supplied by the user Hayday. However I've noticed from recent photographs that he isn't wearing the 1914-1918 victory medal, and upon closer inspection I have found on the HMS Hood page a list of medals, which the main article now cites.

For reference though, he is wearing the following medals, from left-to-right, from top-to-bottom, in the photo to be found on the article here http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/top-stories/2009/01/13/ww1-veteran-bill-stone-dies-at-108-115875-21037215

The lower-most emblem is the Artic Emblem, but I can't make out the others clearly.

As an interesting aside the Russian Convoy 50th anniversary medal isn't officially recognised if worn.
