Lake Babogaya[edit]

Air base[edit]

My assumption was/is that the airport in Debre Zeyit was solely for military use, not commercial. However, I am only basing this on the fact that Ethiopian Airlines does not fly to QHR/HAHM (according to ET's current domestic timetable); it might still have some commercial use. When I tried a Google search about the airport, this was the only relevant link that I found. (Side note: Although I was in the area at the time, I didn't know about the May 2004 bombing until today.) -- Gyrofrog (talk) 22:26, 7 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Requested move[edit]

The following discussion is an archived discussion of the proposal. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. No further edits should be made to this section.

The result of the proposal was no move. No consensus for a move. The evidence presented in the discussion below does not give clear guidance, so rely on inertia and leave it alone. If in the future further source evidence is available the debate can always be reopened. -- PBS (talk) 10:50, 5 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Debre ZeyitBishoftu – Request made by user:Gyrofrog on 2 December 2011 using template:movenotice on the article page. The reason given for the requeted move by Gyrofrog is "Bishoftu, ... is the official name (as used in the 2007 Census)" -- PBS (talk) 16:09, 7 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I'm wondering if this article should be moved/re-named to "Bishoftu," which is the official name (as used in the 2007 Census). This is how I treated Adama when creating that article (though in personal experience, I've never heard anyone call it anything other than "Nazareth"). I'm not sure if, or how, we've consistently done this with other articles about cities that (officially) reverted to an earlier name. -- Gyrofrog (talk) 20:28, 2 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

From my study of both the 2007 & 1995 censuses, their selection of placenames can be very arbitrary -- especially with smaller locations. Add to that the Amharic tendency to be very casual with how cities/towns/villages are referred to -- & some clear examples of ethnic/religious prejudice -- & I'd rely on the Censuses only as a last resort. (Which is the case far more often than not.) As for other possible criteria, AFAIK "Debre Zeyit" is the most familiar name to English speakers. However, "Bishoftu" is the pre-1950 name for the settlement, & may be the preferred Oromo name; I've seen some recent usage of that name. I've been reverting usage in the article to Debre Zeyit only to maintain consistency, so if someone could provide a verifiable piece of evidence that Bishoftu is the better choice -- e.g., official endorsement of that name by either the Oromia state government, official Ethiopian government publications -- I'd be willing to acquiesce to the change.

Concerning Adama/Nazareth, FWIW, I let you decide on that issue simply because the person who wrote the article should be allowed to decide what to call it. :) -- llywrch (talk) 18:38, 3 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Ada[edit]

According to this map from the 1940s, the city was once called "Ada." Given the time frame, I am guessing that the Italians applied that name. -- Gyrofrog (talk) 17:04, 22 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
