Industrial centre
[edit]Blackley was a rural community until it became a Manchester overspill in the mid 20th century. It's never been an industrial centre, never mind one of "international status". I think that section ought to be removed completely. ---- Eric 20:25, 10 April 2007 (UTC)
- "It was also an industrial centre of international status. Here is found Avecia, successor to Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI) and AstraZeneca. It was in the ICI laboratories that not only dyestuffs but also medical breakthroughs such as the anti-malarial drug Paludrine, and Antrycide to combat African sleeping sickness were discovered. The area is currently being redeveloped with modern housing for the 21st century."
- I've removed that section. ---- Eric 19:37, 21 April 2007 (UTC)
I have re-instated this section. Having lived in the area, and had family work at the complex, for a length of time, I do not understand why it was removed in the first place. Please look into "ICI Blackley", "Levinstein, Ltd" in a search engine and then explain why a considerable plot of "central Blackley" is now a waste land. refs [1]. Whilst I havent found much additional info, it seems the plant was in existence before 1900. --Keith 21:04, 13 July 2010 (UTC)

Location
[edit]How were the coordinates arrived at? They don't seem very near the middle of Blackley? 81.179.54.102 22:00, 12 November 2007 (UTC)
Was Grid ref: SD874027 Lat: 53:31:16N (53.521) Lon: 2:11:27W (-2.19087)
The centre can derived various ways!!!!. (And depending on time period!) The toolserver map being brought up from the grid co-ordinates originally, show it to be to the EAST of Boggart Hole Clough, in what is definitely now regarded as Moston, from what I can make of it!. Some of the points on Toolserver, are positioned far from where they are!!
It doesnt help when references used are purely written by web-editors. The Papillon Graphics' Virtual Encyclopaedia of Greater Manchester used places Blackley to the east of Rochdale Road - totally ignoring the expanse on the west side!!. It also ignores the industrial overspill in the latter half of the 19th century, which is shown on maps of the time!
Google Maps marker for Blackley is some distance away from here, but is more in line with a mid point for Blackley and Moston combined.
I understand that Old Market Street was the original central area, with its church. Bisecting the larger area of gives a centre some quarter mile west, roughly on the site of what was Connolly's Wire Works. I have reset the infobox to show a mid point between these two, which equates to the location shown in the 1848 map.
Actual Grid ref: SD853028 Lat: 53:31:21N (53.52246) Lon: 2:13:22W (-2.22282)

- The Papillon Graphics' Virtual Encyclopaedia of Greater Manchester is full of innaccuracies and isn't a good source for anything really. Richerman (talk) 13:15, 14 July 2010 (UTC)
Heaton Park
[edit]Good old Heaton Park gets claimed by everyone, Crumpsall, Blackley, Prestwich......It's bordered by all these places (plus Simister and maybe Rhodes) but is actually part of the City of Manchester, although I think it was part of Prestwich before it was sold to Manchester Council by the Earl of Wilton. Richerman (talk) 12:33, 29 December 2007 (UTC)
As such, I have totally excluded the area in finding the geographic "centre" of Blackley used in the location section above. (it would shift it app 1000 yards North east) --Keith 07:53, 14 July 2010 (UTC)
Notable People
[edit]Always a problematic entry.
I have added a rider, before any more irrelevant entries are placed. To qualify here, then the person either should have been born in the area, or Manchester area and become a Blackley resident.
I have removed Tony Monopoly on the grounds his online bio information is very scant. He was suposedly a monk at St Clares, but there is only a fleeting, unsupported remark. The wikipedia article states he "died in Brighton, England on 21 March 1995, whilst visiting St Clare's, Blackley, where he had once been a monk.", whilst IMDB says he died in Blackley, doesnt inspire any confidence. In fact on checking the only source, there is no reference to Manchester, apart from possibly filming with Bernard Manning.
I have removed Mike Hall, as employment for 4yrs at ICI Blackley is no way notable. --Keith 17:17, 14 July 2010 (UTC)
Industry
[edit]Removed a reference to 14,000 in 1961. Although this is figure quoted in source material, I beleive it relates to total employed at all sites by the company. On reflection, 14,000 in the Vale seems too many bodies!!! --Keith 16:30, 25 July 2010 (UTC)

Blackley → Blackley, Greater Manchester — There is also a location in West Yorkshire under Blackley, West Yorkshire. Crouch, Swale (talk) 18:18, 3 October 2010 (UTC)
If a move is to take place then should be to Blackley, Manchester. The location is a significant suburb of the City of Manchester. It is in Greater Manchester, but it is a specified district within the City of Manchester --Keith 19:10, 3 October 2010 (UTC)
- Oppose. It would seem to be that this Blackley is the WP:PRIMARYTOPIC being a suburb with a population of several thousand as opposed to a very small village. Google news / Google searches are difficult due to people with this name etc so I'd be open to changing my mind if someone can convince me that there is no primary topic but based on the information currently available to me there is no primary topic and so we should s=keep things as they are. Dpmuk (talk) 21:25, 3 October 2010 (UTC)
- Oppose. I agree with Dpmuk. Malleus Fatuorum 21:37, 3 October 2010 (UTC)
