Naming

[edit]

Blacklion is an English language name for this border village in West Co Cavan, Ireland. It is said to be derived from an ancient Inn of the same name but no record of this inn exists. Presumably it was from the horse and carriage era.

In the 1950's the village name plate read Learga. This was the name by which local -older generation- people would have called the place - i.e. colloquially called 'Leargy'.

Learga is the plural of an Irish language word 'Learg' meaning rising ground, slopes, mountainside. This would connect with the name of the village which sits below steeply risng ground and hills at its back.

Well never mind these geographical/cultural connections. Learga does not appear on any village sign now. This is part of the new 'Celtic Tiger Ireland' . Bíodh greim agat ar do chiall tá an tíogar céilteach sa bhaile. Dia linn.

Wonderful storey, beautifully written - probably means it's "non-encyclopaedic"! (Sarah777 13:02, 18 August 2007 (UTC))[reply]
