Working notes during Article Draft Creation[edit]

This is barely a stub. I believe Blackrock Island notability in its own right, but this has especially come to the fore with 2017 Irish Coast Guard Rescue 116 crash. (( I found myself wanting to know about Blackrock Island Mayo but couldn't find it on Wikipedia )

Google Earth is:

[[1]]

The section on Blackrock Lighthouse on the Blacksod Lighthouse page perhaps could be usefully moved to this article.

I may not have the bandwidth to complete this article fully.

It seems there is a recording of singer, Padraig Ó Maolruaidh held by midwest radio on the death of Patrick monaghan held by Midwest radio.

I'm out of time on this myself but I'd hope there's enough to go on for an initial Wikipedia article. I'd hope others can gradually expand content.

I returned and got a second wind and added a little to the article. I'd love to add a picture, there are some great ones about, but the ones's I've found would likely have copyright issues (be warned).

Move of Blackrock Lighthouse to this article[edit]

RE "The section on Blackrock Lighthouse on the [[Blacksod Lighthouse page perhaps could be usefully moved to this article"
I agree. As per my comment on Talk:Blacksod Lighthouse, I think it's confusing where it is. Now that this article provides a "better place to put it", I'd agree that it should be moved. If there is any remaining stuff about the lighthouse (not already covered here), then it should be moved. And removed from the other article. Otherwise we'll end-up with a confusing content fork. Guliolopez (talk) 13:22, 23 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I've got a third wind and just about to attempt it .... thanks for confirming this would be useful ... and probably best done soonest ... should be finished in an hour ... Djm-leighpark (talk) 13:43, 23 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I have completed the move to the best of my ability and made appropriate tweaks to the Blacksod Lighthouse Article to suit in addition to those started by Guliolopez. People are welcome to tweak. Djm-leighpark (talk) 14:57, 23 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Bomber attack[edit]

Thought: Bomber straffing attack ... Was this the first Bomber attack on Irish [Republic] soil in WWII ? Although it was likely unplanned. The attack on Campile was six days later, may have been planned and unfortunately lives were lost. Djm-leighpark (talk) 14:57, 23 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I've stumbled across a couple of references to the Bomber attack and have linked them in to pool information from a couple of sources.

Djm-leighpark (talk) 20:50, 23 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Postulation: WP:SPECULATE It's just possible the reason the German Bomber crew thought they were attacking a 12000T freighter rather than the 666T SS Macville is that they thought the Blackrock lighthouse as part of a bigger ship in the darkness. This is my speculation so I'm not putting it in the article.

Couple more notes on this:

  • http://www.waterfordsdead.shaunmcguire.co.uk/c.htm notes Patrick Colbert, 22, of Waterford lost his life on the SS Macville on the date of the attack.
  • Ubique: The Royal Artillery in the Second World War, 978-1862274921, By Richard Doherty note the attack was at 1pm, the bomber used both bombs and machine gun fire, and the MacVille returned fire with a Lewis Gun. MaCville was carry coal to Limerick. Djm-leighpark (talk) 06:39, 2 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Comments on article development[edit]

Thanks to a number of people whose useful contributions, encouragement and support have let me move this article forward quickly and given me a second wind, I've had an interesting journey contributing to it but I must hand the baton over. Some thoughts I'd like to dump while fresh in my mind:

  • A little more on the Island Geology, Botany and any wildlife might be nice.
    • A little about the waters around the island would be useful.
  • Haven't really put forward how tough it was for the lighthouse keepers and the difficulties getting to them
  • The neighbouring County of Sligo has it's own 'Blackrock point' light off Rosses point. A possible point of confusion the article might like to point out.
    • Sorted ~~
  • The Lighthouse experts might wish to use the 'Infobox lighthouse' and place some form of redirect. I leave that for others to discuss.
    • Added the lighthouse infobox. Me & coordinates don't get on well. Djm-leighpark (talk) 09:13, 26 March 2017 (UTC). Sorted Co-ords (eventually) Djm-leighpark (talk) 20:14, 28 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • A non copyright and problem free picture would be really nice
  • The references I've used are the ones I've found, and will often be secondary references.
  • The likely forthcoming AAIU report may yield a citable reference for facts about the Island

R116 crash - Island not correctly in terrain databases[edit]

This is not the primary source for discussing the R116 crash. However the fact Blackrock is missing from some reputable source terrain databases and it's height incorrectly specified in other's is a fact independent of the crash. Djm-leighpark (talk) 18:46, 15 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
