Matilda Blanche Gibbs

[edit]

Quote "Gibbs was an extremely wealthy man, the co-founder of the firm Antony Gibbs & Sons, and had built his fortune in trading food and goods from South America, before joining in the Atlantic slave trade, and the trade in guano from Lima [2]". There is absolutely no evidence that the firm Antony Gibbs & Sons was involved in the Atlantic slave trade. The reference given [2] is to the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, which does not include any reference to Atlantic slavery. The full historical business records of the company are all stored in the London Metropolitan Archives and have been thoroughly researched. The significant increase in wealth, from initially trading wooden clothes and other goods with Spain (leading to bankruptcy) and later South America, came through the contract as exclusive shipping agents for Peruvian guano.
