Incoherence[edit]

"Stoically", he effectively cancelled his own father's "$6,115-a-year toll-collector's job", which John A. C. Swainson held since 1957.

This sentence is incoherent. What is the point of a link to stoicism? Why is it in quotes? Why "effectively"? Who was his father, not previously mentioned in the article? Why is the job mentioned in quotes? That's six problems in just one sentence, and a seventh is that "held" should be "had held". So yeah, incoherent. So would the two people who put it back when I removed it explain why those six questions don't matter to them? 46.208.152.26 (talk) 09:32, 22 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Please read the original article from Time before you just delete sourced content. The word "stoically" is a direct quote, and it's linked so that readers unfamiliar with the term can get further information. I think the fact that a governor ending a toll that put his own father out of work is an interesting piece of information to include, and it reinforces a fact frequently overlooked that ending a toll doesn't just remove the toll, but it also ends employment for people in the process.
Additionally, when a bold change (such as the deletion of content) is contested through reversion, especially by two people, you should not be removing it a third time without discussion. Please see WP:BRD for a good alternative process that resorts to discussion much sooner. Imzadi 1979  13:04, 22 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
How's this, Imzadi1979? Let's lose the quote, keep the ref, and instead re-write it paraphrasing. Something like "In x-year, Michigan governor wikilink ended the $0.25 toll, effectively eliminating his own father's job as a toll collector." You're a much better wordsmith than I, so feel free to futz it around for better flow. This satisfies the IP's grammar concerns, and by adding the year, conveys more information. IMO, the IP is absolutely correct; dad's name is irrelevant. John from Idegon (talk) 14:29, 22 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
