"Early middle ages"?
[edit]Considering that the 15th century is usually the late cutoff date for the middle ages, I surmise the author ment something else?
To my knowledge, boar spears only became popular from the 15th century through to around the 18th.
Any more experienced hunters out there...? --Syzygy (talk) 09:35, 13 November 2008 (UTC)
- Yes, the article's original author probably meant the early modern period, not the early Middle Ages. The statement makes even less sense when you consider this design was fairly common throughout the later Middle Ages, and as you say, well into the late 17th century and the general zenit of spear use in on-foot or mounted hunting. I think there is some confusion here over what is a boar spear and what a winged spear. The latter tended to have more significant protrusions (spear lobes, I suppose) above the spearhead socket. Many boar spears look simpler in comparison. Many of the boar spears, though primarily hunting weapons, also share the same kind of blade shape with military spears of the period. It is possible to classify spear types or spearhead types, but it can be a bit tricky. --ZemplinTemplar (talk) 19:37, 27 March 2018 (UTC)
Removal of paragraph about combat
[edit]I have removed the paragraph (already tagged as dubious) regarding the popularity of boar spears for use in combat and their alleged advantages. I agree that this is dubious and no citation has been offered, nor can I find any source substantiating these claims. Cloudspert (talk) 00:39, 11 July 2018 (UTC)
Should this article be a merged with Bear spear?
[edit]As someone who lacks first hand experience with the two types of spear I have a hard time recognising why they need two separate articles. Based on how the articles are currently written and the photographic examples used in them it seems to me like they are at most size-variants of the same weapon.
That's why I believe that either both articles need to be updated to emphasis what makes them unique, both articles need to be merged with one becoming a section on the other for a variant, or one needs to be included as an alternative name on the other like with Puma on the Cougar page. 2001:1C07:102:C200:55FC:209B:2DF0:9683 (talk) 05:42, 12 August 2024 (UTC)
