Coaching Section

[edit]

To claim that Bobby Dodd did not believe in "exploiting" student-athletes is to infer that other coaches do. This is either a clear case of NPOV, or a source stating that other coaches do indeed believe in "exploiting" student-athletes needs to be provided. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.154.98.98 (talk) 03:34, 21 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The term "exploited" specifically is used to describe Coach Dodd's feeling on the matter by those close to him at the time (see Kim King's books and personal conversations with other GT old-timers memories of the time). Apparently Coach Dodd did think other coaches, like Bear Bryant, were "exploiting" student athletes. It may or may not have been the case (that would depend on how you viewed the way the SEC rules were being applied at the time), but it is most assuredly how Coach Dodd thought.Bkporter12 (talk) 16:30, 6 December 2008 (UTC)BKPorter12[reply]
Either way, the rewritten section takes care to clarify his reasons. —Disavian (talk/contribs) 04:49, 6 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

GA Review

[edit]
This review is transcluded from Talk:Bobby Dodd/GA1. The edit link for this section can be used to add comments to the review.

Overall the article is good. It's shorter than I'd like, especially given his accolades, but i won't hold it against you. Anyway, here are a couple issues I found:

  • Any chance on a bit of expansion or are the sources exhausted? If the latter that's okay.
  • I'd beef up the fair use rationale a bit. It's fine for inclusion in and of itself, but if you're heading to FAC with this I don't know if it would pass as is.  Done
  • Ref #11 (Football program, traditions spurred by Dodd) is a dead link.  Done
  • Your source says he led the Vols to a 24-1-1 record, yet I'm finding several that say 27-1-2, including the sources below.  Done

Prose wise everything looks good. In terms of sourcing and info adding, I found a couple more sources that may help you out: [1][2][3]

I'll put it on hold for a few days and pass it if it looks ready then. Wizardman 02:01, 14 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

This is a very enjoyable review. :) Still need to add these sources [4][5] to the article. —Disavian (talk/contribs) 15:46, 14 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The major points are there in the article, and although expansion is certainly recommended via the sources I presented and authors, I feel the comfortable passing it as a GA (though I wouldn't go to FAC yet if that's your eventual goal). Wizardman 03:51, 16 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I've been spanked enough at FAC to know to not bring things there until they're good and ready. And even then, who knows what will happen. —Disavian (talk/contribs) 06:44, 16 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

What’s up with saying in his wiki that Ga Tech won national title in 1991?? Huh? Skip30 (talk) 16:34, 7 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

This article was nominated for DYK on June 12, 2013. Mistercontributer (talk) 23:07, 12 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Items Removed by User:Magnolia677

[edit]

@Magnolia677: per my edit summary reverting your edits, and per message left on on your talk page, and per this talk page discussion you requested for me to start, please provide explanations for removal for each item you recently removed from this article. thank you Mistercontributer (talk) 00:35, 9 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Mistercontributer: I made five consecutive edits, and left edit summaries for each. Could you please add a diff, as well as the concern you have, and I will respond in detail. Thank you. Magnolia677 (talk) 10:42, 9 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Magnolia677: as previously requested 3 times already, please provide an explanation for removals for all of the items that you recently removed from this article. As previously stated, "removed photo" is not an adequate explanation. If you need the diffs, they are listed below. thanks Mistercontributer (talk) 13:50, 9 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Diff1
Diff2
Regarding the first diff above, I left the edit summary "Photos of text should be avoided, per MOS:IMAGES". With that edit I removed three photos of plaques that were entirely text. The information those images intended to show had already been added as text to the article, making the images purely decorative. This is addressed at MOS:TEXTASIMAGES. In that edit I also resized this image by making it "upright". The use of upright is addressed at MOS:UPRIGHT and WP:EIS. Regarding the second diff listed above, I left the edit summary "Removed photo of Dodd's son". This article is about Bobby Dodd, though the article also mentions that his son, Bobby Dodd Jr., is a non-notable amateur athlete. Adding a stand-alone photo of Bobby Dodd's non-notable son (or wife or cousin or dog) to the article is not "significant and relevant in the topic's context", per MOS:IMAGES. Thank you. Magnolia677 (talk) 15:14, 9 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
If you had actually read the article and references before deleting the picture of Dodd's son, you would have learned that Dodd's son had a negative impact on Dodd's coaching career, since Dodd's son was the starting quarterback for University of Florida when that team beat Georgia Tech in upset victory when Dodd was the coach, which is extremely notable. The picture of Dodd's son as quarterback of the University of Florida is therefore notable and adds to the readers' understanding of this situation, vs. picture of Dodd's "cousin or dog." The plaques that you removed from this article provided additional information which helped the reader to better understand the subject, and therefore served much more than decorative purpose. Also, 2 of the 3 pictures of plaques were uploaded and added to this article during calendar year 2012. This article has been reviewed by thousands of readers and editors since then, and you are the first to have a problem with these plaques. Why were these plaques not a problem during the past 5 years but all of a sudden these plaques are problem? Also, please let me know if you plan on removing all pictures of all plaques in all other articles which contain pictures of plaques? Mistercontributer (talk) 21:31, 9 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Magnolia677: as a compromise, I added back what is necessary, but did not add back 2 of the plaques that you removed. Hopefully, this compromise will resolve this issue. In the future, I recommend that you describe your proposals for significant changes on article talk pages before making major changes to articles, especially if those changes involve removing items which have been included in articles for many years without any prior objections or concerns. thank you Mistercontributer (talk) 20:11, 10 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The Third Opinion request made in connection with this dispute has been removed (i.e. rejected) because like all other moderated content dispute resolution venues at Wikipedia, Third Opinion requires thorough talk page discussion before seeking assistance. Once you filter out the discussion about what you're going to talk about about and how you're going to talk about it, there's no real back-and-forth discussion addressing the points which each of you have made, much less thorough discussion of those points. If you're still stalled after that discussion has occurred, you may reapply at 3O or some other dispute resolution venue. — TransporterMan (TALK) 16:37, 11 September 2017 (UTC) (Not watching this page)[reply]

Bit of a mess... re: prior to playing

[edit]

I don't see any primary source for the notion that he specifically wanted to attend Georgia Tech, nor is it mentioned anywhere here that he initially enrolled at Vanderbilt before transferring to Tennessee. Granted, sources are sparse for this time period. 24.179.74.183 (talk) 18:15, 26 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
