Clarification

[edit]

The statement "are some of the basic teachings of Mahayana Buddhism." is not quite accurate. This particular grouping is something unique to Soto Zen only, but it does comprise of important elements of Mahayana Buddhism. Namely, the ten precepts listed are from the Mahayana version of the Brahma Net Sutra, while the rest is something uniquely devised by Dogen. This should be clarified.

Merging with the Bodhisattva Vow Article

[edit]

I believe there is a lot of overlap between the two articles. The Bodhisattva Vow article contains a lot of useful information with regard to bodhicitta and the notion of taking a vow, but its section on the precepts and how they apply to Buddhism are somewhat unclear. Meanwhile this article is more polished on that subject. I propose either:

  • Combining this article into that one, replacing the existing information on the precepts, or
  • Expanding this one with information on the Bodhisattva Vow, and redirecting the other article page to this one.

Bodhisattva vows are initial vows taken by a bodhisattva. Bodhisattva precepts are codes of conduct followed by a bodhisattva along the path. One is an aspiration, and the other is a standard for behavior. They have quite different purposes, and are rather different concepts, so I think the articles should not be merged. Best regards. Hello fellow Wikipedians,

I have just added archive links to 2 external links on Bodhisattva Precepts. Please take a moment to review my edit. You may add {{cbignore}} after the link to keep me from modifying it, if I keep adding bad data, but formatting bugs should be reported instead. Alternatively, you can add {{nobots|deny=InternetArchiveBot}} to keep me off the page altogether, but should be used as a last resort. I made the following changes:
