Accreditation[edit]

Chilean principles of accreditation vs. autonomy of universities is different than the concepts in english. Accreditation in the english speaking countries generally refers to whether or not individual licensing boards, professional societies, and the government officially recognize the degrees granted from a university. UB has full authority from the government to grant degrees in a number of majors, and the curriculum of the degrees is dictated by the law. the degrees are officially recognized. In chile, private education was not legal until the 80's during which time the government granted authority to issue degrees in individual careers as opposed to institution wide "accreditation." Accreditation didnt come about until 1999 and as it currently stands there is institution wide accreditation and accreditation in individual careers. UB has accreditation in many individual careers and is in the process of institution-wide accreditation. But we should be careful to say it is not 'accredited' since in english this implies that degrees from UB are not officially recognized by the government or professional societies, whereas in fact degrees from UB are officially recognized. a law degree from UB, for instance, gives someone the right to practice law in an official manner. as does psicology degrees, pedagogy & education (which are individually accredited), etc.... —Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.244.126.207 (talkcontribs)

Thanks for clarifying that. I merged most of your new text into the old version of the page (with the categories etc). Rd232 talk 10:38, 18 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
