Requested move 12 October 2020

[edit]
The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.

The result of the move request was: Moved to Bombing of Rangoon in World War II: There is consensus that this disambiguation is preferred over using the years. I see no consensus on what to put at the originally proposed title (Bombing of Rangoon), so I have left it red. (non-admin closure) BegbertBiggs (talk) 00:38, 30 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Bombing of Rangoon (1941–1942)Bombing of Rangoon – Since Bombing of Rangoon is a redlink, unless I'm missing something, there's no reason to disambiguate this title by date. BD2412 T 22:24, 12 October 2020 (UTC)Relisting. Jerm (talk) 04:02, 21 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Differentiation needs to be stressed between the standard Wikipedia form "Bombing of..." [e.g. Bombing of Singapore, a wartime action or series of events] and the Wikipedia form "XXXXXX bombing" [e.g. Wall Street bombing, a single act of terrorism, usually occurring in peacetime]. —Roman Spinner (talkcontribs) 16:39, 13 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
See my reply above. Fowler&fowler«Talk» 21:39, 13 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
In the wild, there is always inconsistency. However, as we all know, Wikipedia has established titling forms. As far as the main title header "Wall Street bombing" is concerned, a glance at headers under Category:Attacks on bank buildings will confirm that the form "City/Place bombing" is common for Wikipedia entries of this nature. Moreover, a longer look at headers under parent Category:Car and truck bombings by country, including sub-parent Category:Suicide car and truck bombings by country will even further confirm that the form "XYZ bombing" is used for terrorist acts, while a study of Category:Firebombings in Japan or its parent Category:Firebombings will likewise confirm that the form "Bombing of..." is used for wartime actions. —Roman Spinner (talkcontribs) 01:26, 14 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, I didn't mean that reply, but the one above it. I'm saying that I personally prefer some further description in the title to orient me. In other words, the title doesn't need to employ ellipses to the limits of natural language. Also as someone said upstairs, there were more aerial bombings a few years later when the allies struck back. Singapore, for example, has two pages Bombing of Singapore (1941) and Bombing of Singapore (1944–1945). For now I would prefer Bombing of Rangoon to redirect to this page. When the 44-45 bombing page is eventually written, both could perhaps be included in Bombing of Rangoon in World War II. Fowler&fowler«Talk» 00:27, 18 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I would support Bombing of Rangoon (1941–1942)Bombing of Rangoon in World War II as an alternative move proposal, analogous to Bombing of Berlin in World War II, etc. However, redirecting Bombing of Rangoon to Bombing of Rangoon (1941–1942) would result in retention of the pre-emptively disambiguated form Bombing of Rangoon (1941–1942), which runs counter to standard style since there is currently no other main title header indicating "Bombing of Rangoon (at some other point in time)". If or when an article bearing such a header is created, then the parenthetical qualifier "(1941–1942)" can be restored to the header of the article under discussion. —Roman Spinner (talkcontribs) 22:38, 22 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Roman Spinner: I too would support Bombing of Rangoon (1941–1942)Bombing of Rangoon in World War II now. I remain opposed the current move request. Thanks. Fowler&fowler«Talk» 03:07, 23 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I would also be fine with Bombing of Rangoon in World War II. My objection to the current title is that it appears to be disambiguating from a nonexistent other "Bombing of Rangoon" title. If an article is created on another notable instance of bombing of Rangoon (rather than a one-off incident merely happening in Rangoon), then we will have a case for disambiguation.
