Use of the term[edit]

Not a neologism. Earliest LexisNexis hit is 1986:

1986 Associated Press 15 Sept., If it [sc. inflation] did try to make a comeback, the bond vigilantes would push rates up to levels that would cause deflation.

Archaic definition[edit]

Perhaps this definition is archaic. I find it hard to believe that people would sell billions of dollars worth of bonds solely as a form of protest. I've seen the use of the term "bond vigilante" to characterize the reaction of bond yields to higher inflation expectations, but the term does not refer to specific individuals, and especially not to a form of protest. For example, in this 2009 WSJ article:

We refer to the global investors once known as the bond vigilantes, who demanded higher Treasury bond yields from the late 1970s through the 1990s whenever inflation fears popped up, and as a result disciplined U.S. policy makers. [online.wsj.com/article/SB124347148949660783.html]
