mistranslation of the word shū 書/书

[edit]

The word shū 書/书 in the name of this and other historical works should not be translated "book", even though that is what it means now. In early traditional times, it meant primarily "to write", "writings", or "history". It would be better to translate the name of the book as "The History of Han", and similarly the other histories bearing this character. And it is usual for sinologists to call this book simply The Hanshu or The Han shu. I'd actually prefer the latter approach, but would accept "history" as a compromise. But "book" is not historically correct usage. Charmii (talk) 03:16, 11 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Charmii is correct. "Book" 書 is the modern meaning of shu. To translate the title as "Book of Han" is anachronistic. Moreover, it misses the reference to the "Confucian" classic, the Hallowed Documents 尚書, with which, as a member of the Old Text school, Ban apparently sought to associate himself. Finally, the generally accepted English rendering of this title is History of the Former Han Dynasty. Cf. Homer H. Dubs. The title of this section should be corrected to accord with accepted usage. The two comments here are completely correct, so I'm surprised and disappointed to see that, seven years later, the entry is still called "Book of Han."--74.103.157.38 (talk) 06:48, 18 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

description of Japan

[edit]

The first appearance of Japanese people in this book is not the part in the article; "The people of Wa are located across the ocean from Lelang, are divided into more than one hundred tribes, and come to offer tribute from time to time." It is later recorded that in 57. This is from the Book of the Later Han.

The first Japanese appear in the Lun heng (論衡 zh:论衡) part in the Book of Han. The part regarding Wa people (Japanese) is;
異虛第十八[1] ; 使暢草生於周之時,天下太平,〔倭〕人來獻暢草。
The 周 (Zhou Dynasty) era is older than the article of Book of the Later Han. Please someone who can read Chinese check the document and revise the article. --Eurodollers (talk) 02:20, 3 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

IMO, this section shouldn't be part of an article on the Hanshu, as the Japanese are not mentioned until the Hou Hanshu (book of later Han). The above quote, from the "Lun Heng" is also not a part of the Hanshu - the Lunheng is a completely different text, not written until the later Han, and after the Hanshu was written. Annals

[edit]

Many, many thanks to Guss at the Dutch Wikipedia who did all the hard work of translating and clarifying from the Chinese and also formatting, as I don't have a clue how to format. I found exactly what I was looking for on the Dutch page, and it really helped me with the Chinese version, so I decided to translate it into English.

Copyvio??

[edit]

The text portion of this article appears to be a copyvio of https://www.amazines.com/Book_of_Han_related.html - unless that article is a copyvio of this one. —Mattisse (Talk) 18:02, 22 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

"Wood carved"??

[edit]

The caption on the pic says it is a "wood carved edition." "Wood-block" shurely? "Wood-block print edition" perhaps.

Assessment comment

[edit]

The comment(s) below were originally left at Talk:Book of Han/Comments, and are posted here for posterity. Following several discussions in past years, these subpages are now deprecated. The comments may be irrelevant or outdated; if so, please feel free to remove this section.

The English title should either be rendered History of the Former Han, which has become standard, or Han Documents, which more closely follows the original meaning. The term shū 書 was adopted to place the work within the tradition of the Shang shu 尚書 (Hallowed Documents in David Knechtges accurate rendering, but more commonly Book of History or Book of Documents). Terminology for the different sections of the work also needs to be revised to meet accepted usage.

section request

[edit]

Is either a translation or article on the Emperor Wu section? While regulations would suggest I am allowed to quote directly from it as illustration, it would make more sense for the reader if I wasn't linking directly to the Chinese. This is for another article.FourLights (talk) 09:08, 13 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
